I have been gifted an Android TV box (MXq Pro) and having trouble accessing my NAS.

Everything is connected and ethernet connection working (browser works etc) … what I cannot seem to locate is my network attached storage.

Any assistance most welcome sealed

BTW, my Astone media streamer works perfectly with the NAS.

how are you trying to access the NAS, via SMB or via DLNA? ie like explorer or like a media player

Hi Jason … I don't know what is best/easiest.

My Astone media player simply allowed me to enter NAS name and IP address, and away it went.  I assumed the TV box would be similar?

I presume I want a Media Player so that I can watch videos off the NAS, as well as all my music that is stored there.

As you can see, a complete newbie at this wink

does you nas run a DLNA server? like plex or Kodi to serve up the media to the Astone media streamer?

I have no idea … the NAS is a D-Link ShareCenter and once set up all my Folders/Shares show up on the LAN (computers and Astone media player).

I realise now that the Android TV box needs to access the LAN for internet, which it does, and then I need to 'map' the NAS in whatever media player app I want to use. Fired up Kodi and followed all the online guides, but nothing on my LAN shows up.

UPDATE:  Some partial success … reset NAS to allow NFS, and Kodi picked this option up and I can see path and files.

A little more playing around to sort it all out smile

QUESTION:  I have now installed TV One On Demand app which accessing site no problem.

However, when I select a show to view, I get an error message thus -  "This App is not supported by rooted devices".

I haven't rooted this box so either something awry or the supplier rooted it??

Recommend looking at IPTV via Kodi as per Huismanns install tutorial - and with either his of Apsattvs playlist.

Google the 3 words before the - in his reply ;) It's most likely the first 2 hits of importance.

MXq Pro is more a Chinese 'Android powered Internet TV' device vs a true 'Android TV' certified google device, and likely had google apps/playstore and the OS sideloaded via root. So TVNZ app itself, won't like it.

You'll need an alternate method, of which the guide found will suffice.

For those that know these things -

1: The TV box supplier says that "all these Android boxes come from the factory Rooted".  I assume this is because of their 'customised' interfaces etc?

2:  Why don't the manufacturers Unroot the devices before sale?

3:  Could they be Unrooted and would such cause problems, or better still allow Apps (such as TVNZ) to be installed and work again as normal Apps?

4:  Are there a lot of 'commonly used/popular' Apps that will also baulk with a device being Rooted?

Thanks.

My advice is to cut your losses and get an "Android TV" box rather than just an Android box for your TV.

Ha ha ha , thanks Rob but this box was a gift, so no harm having a play with it … plus a great 'learning experience' tongue-out

That's fine as long as your frustration level does not get too high.
