Here it comes, the Sony Xperia XZ4 is due to be announced on the 25th.

My long run of Xperia fanboyism was nearly over but the Nokia 9 Pureview was too slow getting announced and now I'm glad I got the Xperia XZ2

XZ4 widely reported to have a 21:9 display . . .

I'm an ex Sony user - I loved my Z2, but successive phones have had no appeal from a design perspective. The XZ4 is too tall for me, but that aside, it looks like Sony are starting to get their mojo back. That's a damn nice looking phone.

It is obvious that phone has the wrong form factor and size to fit in the box. So that is not a photo of the XZ4:

The relentless annual updates of the Sony range kept reminding me how far behind I am falling with my Z3. But the six-monthly new releases that started in February 2018 are really rubbing it in now.

Surely thats just a box that is inside the bigger box partly seen in top left corner.

I have wanted to love Xperias but always been put off by the huge bezels.  If they sort that out they will go far.  Better names for the models will help as well.

Read the linked article which shows the original XZ3 photo that was modified.

The box shown is the main box. It is the box cover is shown top left. Sony have been using the same box design since the Z.

I really wanted to like the XZ2, but in our market I didn't think the value proposition was there. There were better options above (S9) and below (p20 pro, nokia) the price point at launch, although I see it has taken quite the haircut now.

And then not long after they released the XZ3, which looked better, but we don't seem to have gotten a local release.

The supposed specs for the xz4 look good, but price point is going to be the determining part. And are we even gonna get it?

I had one for a while (I have forgotten which one!) and liked it apart from the Spark Telecom splash screen which was the main reason I changed. It just annoyed me so much!

Sony go to so much trouble to build the things, then make it next to impossible to buy them with poor distribution and inflated prices (relative to competing phones with similar specs).

The Xperia 1 looks like a great device. Reading GSM Arenas take on it, I could almost see them drooling over it judging by the tone of their writing lol. The only things that look like they could be improved would be the small(ish) battery and a 3.5mm headphone jack (which I could live without). If they can sort out their camera software and actually advertise and distribute this device they could be onto a winner.

There was no local release of the XZ3 because Sony have pulled out of selling phones in the NZ market. Even the Sony stores no longer carry them and cleared out their last remaining stocks of all handsets before Xmas.

The Xperia 1 is too tall for me personally, but that aside, it's a great looking phone and a significant design improvement over the recent Xperia XZ releases.

Looks generally positive if you are after something other than the incumbents (and it is available here at all)

I'd be interested to see how that screen and battery size combo fare for battery life though. And if we do get it, good luck trying to get hands on experience before you buy
