I am moving from custom hardware for my digital dash project to just using a phone and a great bit of software called Realdash. I can still send all the data I need via a serial stream and define everything, and the cheapest simplest way to get a really bright screen in a small form factor is just to use a phone.

I have only had Galaxy Notes since the Note4 days, so I know nothing about what's available...

Requirements:

- Not cost a lot, it's going to be a dedicated digital dashboard

- Stupid, obnoxiously bright display. the brighter the better, should be readable in direct sunlight.

- Bigger screen is better (up to 7" which is I guess getting into tablet size), resolution unimportant if 720P or better

- Wireless charging is a nice to have - I can make build a wireless charger into the mount which would be helpful

Happy to buy secondhand, happy if the case is badly scratched, even if there are minor cracks. I just don't know anything about other phones at the moment :-)

Most important thing is brightness - if I can't read it while driving, it's not useful.

Recommendations happily accepted.

Cheers - N

If you can find a cheap LG G7, the screen goes to 1000 nits or so.

I'd imagine the used value of one isn't that high.

Seconding the LG G7. The ridiculously bright screen is one of its headline features. Has wireless charging too. The screen may be a little small for your needs however.

Sounds like the spec is good, but cheapest I can see one is over $500 still... For that sort of money I could nearly get a Note8(!) which I know would be good enough. Was hoping to spend $2-300 on something, even if banged up

I'll see if I can look at a G7 in the flesh though to see how bright the screen is.

You will want to avoid OLED devices for this purpose as the screens will burn out rapidly at maximum brightness. Maybe look at a Moto, OPPO, or Xiaomi device, the 720p LCD mid-to-entry models get pretty bright.
