With the latest deal on the Nokia 7 plus https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=164&topicid=250581 it's looking very appealing. I was looking at spending around the $500 +/- mark and was tossing up between say a new Moto G7 vs a refurbished Galaxy S8. The S8 appears to me to be the best phone on paper, however, refurbished and still probably ~$100 more expensive (than the G7). Thinking now that this Nokia deal is pretty good, it looks to be a good phone with the bonus of NFC (which the G7 doesn't have) and will save a couple of hundred $ in the process. General phone user, emails, social, occasional photos, podcasts etc. Thoughts?

I'm in the same boat. The Moto G7 sells in Australia for $399 so should sell here for under $500.

The specs of these two phones are more similar than I realised, even though the Nokia is a year older:

Unfortunately the Nokia is single SIM only where as the Moto G7 is dual SIM.

What if you don't care for dual SIM? Which phone would you pick?

At this point the Nokia if I only wanted a single SIM phone. But I want a dual SIM phone so it would be the Motorola though the Nokia man here at GZ said "watch this space" when dual SIM Nokias were mention a week a go.

Yes they are shown as dual SIM on GSMA but the ones sold here in NZ are single SIM only. Nokia is supposed to be bringing in dual SIM phones at some time so that's what I'm holding out for.

Just check my wife's 7 Plus and 1 SIM slot and 1 SD card slot but not both or hybrid,

As I said above, my son's Nokia 7 Plus purchased in NZ (not parallel imported) is dual SIM and it works.

gsmarena doesn't have all the information about the Nokia 7 Plus, there are about 4 variants that I know of. I have seen a dual and a single sim model.

Personally i would go the Nokia 7 Plus and the battery's on Motorola's at present don't last very long and the software is superior to that of the Samsung.

I had another look at the Nokia 7 Plus. I just don't like how it feels in the hand. With a flat back and square edges, it's simply not comfortable to hold. The Android One platform is the main factor drawing me to this phone.

The Moto G feels lovely to hold, with its curved back and rounded edges. Are Motorola pretty good with timely Android security patches? From experience with my current phone, Huawei are useless in that respect.

The Huawei Nova 3e (P20 Lite) would be the perfect phone for me in terms of size and feel, but the lack of regular Android security updates has put me off this brand.

I'm also thinking about waiting a bit longer and stretching my budget to a Pixel 3a.

I bought my wife a thin wallet case for her 7 Plus on Trademe and she has no problems holding it. Regarding Motorola patches . After the first year or when the next model comes out they all but disappear. My Moto G4 Plus battery died after 3 years and after replacing it it runs in a permanent boot loop. It was fine for a month after replacing the battery. I'd go for the Nokia if you want a single SIM phone.

Hmmm. Another downside of the Nokia 7 Plus for me is its shear size. It seems a lot more chunky than some other phones with a 6" screen.

The Pixel 3a is looking tempting, if a retailer with a better reputation than Dick Smith starts selling it locally. More compact, lightweight, and that camera!

No harm in waiting. I hear there's some new Nokia models on the way as well.
