Hi

I'm looking for a new phone. I've just accidentally drowned my previous phone, so as a result I'm now very interested in phones with IP68 waterproofing feature 🙂

Budget is around $600 (might be able to stretch to $700 for the right phone).
Looking for a mid-range Android phone (or previous-generation flagship).

Most important feature is IP68 waterproofing (hopefully to prevent future drownings).

Other important features:
* FullHD (1920x1080) or better screen resolution
* Largish screen 5.5" or bigger
* Decent camera (used often for snapshots)
* 32GB storage minimum, 64GB+ preferred
* microSD card capability (for photo storage) - if not included, then phone storage would need to be larger - 64GB minimum
* Decent battery life
* Decent performance
* Needs to work on Vodafone network

I don't really have a brand preference. My recent android phone history was:
Samsung Galaxy S3, then Samsung Galaxy S5, then I changed to Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro (my just drowned phone).

I imagine IP68 waterproofing will drastically reduce the available options.

I guess another option might be a waterproof case to go on a non-IP68 phone.
I haven't had any experience with waterproof cases, so would be interested in any feedback on these too, but I guess it would add a lot of bulk to the phone.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Just be aware that no manufactuers will warrant their phones against water damage (regardless of IP ratings).

I'm genuinely curious if there have been cases where the disputes tribunal has ruled on this sort of thing under the CGA?

I would have thought that if you want to market your goods as water resistant (I'm not going to say waterproof as I understand that almost no manufacturer actually markets them as waterproof) then it would seem reasonable that consumers would expect some level of resistance to water...

Overseas yes.

Don't know about NZ but IP rating usually means the article is protected from water damage up to a certain depth for a particular period of time. Both are hard to prove in a court/tribunal.

I have a good old Xperia Z5 that's still going strong that I'm loath to upgrade as it meets all my phone and app needs

Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8+

Also Pricespy have IP rating as a filter option. So that is by far the easiest way to figure out which phones are waterproof, and then compare price Vs features.

My ancient Samsung Galaxy S2 wound up in the washing machine, and I replaced it with a Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017), which I have been very happy with.  It is IP68 rated down to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes.  The other main feature of the A3 (2017) for me is that it is still small enough to fit in my pocket comfortably while riding a push bike.  The A3 (2018) is bigger.

Worth noting that the new (2019) Samsung A-series is not water-resistant, Samsung choose to focus on boosting the camera/processor/RAM/storage specs instead.

There's always the good ol' Xcover range!
