I'm trying to to add an XXX@YYbusiness.co.nz account to a Samsung S8 Plus.

I keep getting this message; Couldn't Verify Account. The username or password is incorrect or POP3/IMAP access isn't turned on for this account. Check your email settings on the web, then try again.

I have successfully added this account as a POP3 account to a laptop using MS Outlook as the email client. I have been able to add it as an IMAP account to a non Android phone using the native email client and a non Samsung Android tablet using the native email client.

I tried to add it to a Samsung Tab S3 and got the same error using the Samsung email client. The problem is starting to look like it is Samsung related. As all the other email accounts on the phone are on the Samsung email client I am very reluctant to have to use another email client.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks

Does the server require SSL, and if so, is SSL enabled on the Samsung email client in the mailbox account settings?

Yep, SSL is enabled as is required for this account. The settings I've used have been exactly the same on every device.

Are you using autocomplete or autofill when filling out username details on the Samsung devices? It can leave a space character after text when you use this method, which could be upsetting things.

I'll check on that but I'm pretty sure I didn't use auto complete on the S3 tablet

I've just checked, the autofill/autocomplete isn't the problem.

My mission was to install the account on an S8. When I couldn't get that to work I tried the Tab S3, which didn't work, then I tried another phone and another tablet that both worked using their native emails clients.

I tried the GMail client on the Tab S3 and that works.

The only common thing so far is the Samsung email client. Since all the other emails accounts on the S8 use the Samsung email client I want to use that for the new email account. Hmmmm?

Problem solved.

It was the way the Samsung client handled the user name field. It just inserted the name at the front of the email address where as all the others either didn't show the user name field and or automatically filled the complete email address. I hadn't noticed this subtle difference when I tried setting up the account on the various devices. When you change the user name field to the complete email address it works. :)

It just goes to show that when you cannot figure something out taking a break or sleeping on gives you a fresh perspective to tackle the problem and help see the error.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The Samsung stock email client is junk, IMO.  Try Bluemail, it's way faster, handles bigger loads & allows a full HTML signature.  Bluemail doesn't work so well on mid-range phones, it'll crash when using cut & paste functions while typing an email. Tab S3 should handle the workload though.

This wasn't one of my devices, I was doing it for someone else.

However the reason why I like using the native clients is the they interact better with the calendar app etc. I did have issues with one native app that didn't handle links so well and tried Bluemail among other clients and settled on Outlook for that device for email and used the native client to handle syncing the calendar entries. It wasn't ideal but it worked.

I've found the Samsung client more than adequate for my purposes.
