Hello! I have a few Android phones that I've recently flashed LineageOS on:

  • LOS 14 on a Nexus 4
  • LOS 16 on a OnePlus One

The 1+1 is my daily driver that stopped receiving security updates ages ago, so I finally decided to wipe it and deploy Lineage onto it. It's working really well with this one super-annoying problem: I can't receive SMS messages at all. Which unfortunately means I'm excluded from common services that use SMS for verification (banks, alternate messaging services, non-Authy 2FA, etc).

  1. I can send SMS, but not receive
  2. I can send and receive voice calls
  3. I can use mobile data (surfing websites, downloads, tethering, etc) normally.

Interestingly, I had the same problems on the Nexus 4 with the older LineageOS. When I took it to the 2Degrees shop to replace the SIM, the in-store technician was able to receive text messages on it using an off-the-shelf phone. On that hunch, I flashed the most recent OTA image to the Nexus 4 and it worked as expected. All of the texts I've been expecting for the last few days arrived, as if they were never delivered. That seems to confirm a few things for me:

  • there's nothing wrong with the hardware on either phone
  • there's nothing wrong with my SIM card
  • there IS an issue with the LineageOS software
  • My messages are not lost: they are delayed. The phone is effectively offline until the SIM is placed in a different phone, though it will send/receive phone calls and internet service

Has anybody else had this problem with LineageOS, 2Degrees, and/or the OnePlus One?

Thanks!

Are the smsc numbers correct in the OS?  Normally done via sim card but that could be the issue.

@tripp The SMSC number is only valid when roaming and it's not used for incoming SMS only sending

The SMSC number was used for sending when on home network many years ago but not these days

Is it using the default SMS app? Is it Message by Google? If not, try the Google Messages app?

Also just to test, install Signal (without registering your phone for Signal service, otherwise you will have to remember to un-register late) to see if it works?

I don't have a 1+1 but I've used LineageOS on many devices (Including the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 6) and never had problems receiving SMS.

Have you tried a different SMS app? I'd recommend installing the Messages app from the Play Store, open it to make it your default app (make sure you grant all permissions), then reboot and test.

If you're still having issues, you may need to flash a different baseband (modem firmware). I'd suggest checking the XDA Forums, they should have a list of flashable firmware zips - you might need the latest one or one that's best compatible with the version of LineageOS you're running

Thanks for all the replies everyone, it's a huge help!

@turb: regretably, my preferred name null was taken so this will have to do.

@tripp: I have tried entering the SMSC. I had to dial *#*#4636*#*# then enter "Phone Information": when I refresh, a phone number briefly appears and Update doesn't appear to fail. However, the number never seems to stick.

@freitasm: I've tried with the stock Messages app and Google Messaging.  Neither one seemed to work. It's interesting because I only noticed this at all when I was unable to register for Telegram. Ironically it sends you an SMS to verify control of the number. They don't tell you this, but after a couple of days of trying over SMS they'll make a voice call with the code instead. I haven't tried Signal specifically so I'll give that a go.

@d3Xt3r: that's a really good tip, cheers for that. Do you know how I can check (or backup) my current radio image before I look at replacing it? I'm wary of making the issue worse!

What version of lineage os is it based on Android 10?

If it was me I would do a full reset and not restore a backup and test. If still doing it jump back to Android 9. Sounds like an issue with the firmware.

Just go to Settings > About and check the Baseband version there. There's no need to back it up, all versions should be available online, or at least all the recent ones. It's part of the official ROM download provided by OnePlus, the firmware zips on XDA just extract the baseband and other low-level firmware bits to make it easier for custom ROM users. If you don't want to use an XDA zip, just flash the official ROM from the OnePlus website followed by LineageOS.

Btw you have done a full factory reset right, before you switched to LineageOS?

full factory reset

I arrived in this state after running fastboot oem unlock... which I had done many times before on other phones, but for whatever reason, this time I expected a warning! That triggered an erase, and then I installed the LineageOS image. Is that effectively the same thing?

Update: I kind of fixed my phone by installing a different operating system. I ended up installing an AOSP build of Android, which is as close to the stock project as you can get. All connectivity including text messages worked fine on the new build. Thus, I think the issue lies somewhere in LineageOS. My best guess is that it's using some service to read text messages that no longer works with 2Degrees.

Hope this helps someone else in the future!

Cheers,
