Having used 3G and 4G modem dongles plus SIM card on laptops, the device auto-installs appropriate control software (on/off/SMS/data usage etc).

Does anyone have a recommendation for similar app on Android where SIM card is internal … I tried connecting using OTG cable but obviously the software is Mac or Win only.

Not really.  Telco's usually have their own SIM menu within the OS settings of the device, but controlling things like mobile data on/off is stuff that's built into the OS.

Tested with SIM and Android has suitable off/on for data, as well as TXTing, so that's good.  The data counter isn't too bad but maybe a specific telco app might give more detail.

Most providers will have their own "My Account" type app that shows your data usage among other things.
