Was having a sudden urge to upgrade my S10 Snapdragon to something newer but all the phones that are coming out are quite big.

For me, perfect phone size is 6" or 145-150mm height but most new phones are huuge. I have an Apple laptop(mac pro), wife is on an iphone+Mac Air as well but I've been on Android user since 2012 (Iphone 5)!

P.S Totally love my S10, no issues whatsoever. Still performs like new but I'm a sucker for new tech.

Sony are apparently looking to release a new smaller phone at flagship specs soon.

Handsomedan:

Sony are apparently looking to release a new smaller phone at flagship specs soon.

"The biggest question, though, is whether the new Xperia Compact will offer flagship-level specifications or if it’ll fall into the same pitfall of other shrunken-down Android devices and offer downgraded specs to match its smaller size."

I hope this isn't true. Reports say that they are going to use an lower speccd camera.

Also read this "Apple’s iPhone 12 mini, while offering virtually identical specifications to the larger iPhone 12, has reportedly seen lackluster sales compared to the larger models on offer (despite its lower price tag). There are additional reports that Apple is shifting production away from the smaller model to focus more on the full-sized phones."

Now that is okay for Apple because their regular iPhone 12 and Pro (not max) are reasonably compact to begin with. Iphone 12 pro is basically a pro max with smaller screen. None of the Androids phone can say that about their models at the moment.

According to the below article S10 and S10e sales aren't too bad at all?

Pixel 5 is positively cute compared to the monolith-sized flagships that are generally available. It also has extremely good battery life.

It doesn't have a top-tier chipset but it's good enough that there's virtually no difference in use.

Really the only issue with it is its price. If it cost $599 US instead of $699 it'd be the no-brainer Android phone for most people. As it is you have to pay close to flagship money for a phone without flagship specs.

Yea, such shame they use lower speccd hardware that it's main competition.

I don't like super-sized phones (ie. tall) and recently moved from a Galaxy S10e to the slightly larger iPhone 12. I did seriously weigh up between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini for some weeks, but finally opted for the bigger phone solely over battery life concerns with the Mini. After a few weeks with the iPhone 12, I have adjusted to the size and am glad I did not opt for the Mini. I am now at my absolute max for phone height - as far as I am aware, all Android flagships are taller than the iPhone 12.

S21?  I guess it depends on your meaning of flagship.  Can you stretch 1.7mm further up!?

151.7 x 71.2 x 7.9 mm

Well another reason I was looking at upgrading was because my friend was going to buy iphone 12 pro and wanted to sell his s20 5g exynos to me for $700 which he paid $1.5k for.

Then I started researching s20v21 and some say s21 is really in a way backwards step.

In terms of size, s10 is pushing it.

Same thing with cars. In the eyes of the manufacturers, you can't improve a model by making it smaller. And so after 30 years of 'improvement' the corolla is almost the same size as the corona.

Phones are now getting too big to easily fit in the pocket of some of my pants.

Everything expanding. Money size people size phone size car size even the universe is expanding apparently.

You are obviously invested to a degree in to Apple ecosystem, and if the iPhone12 (or mini) ticks all the boxes...then why not?  At least it would feel like 'new tech'. Often the shine of new hardware fades quickly when it ends up looking and feeling exactly like your old phone.  For me I think the s10 was 'peak' Samsung and things have gone downhill since.

With iphone 12, I'll have to spend $1900 + $700, then whatever for the wireless chargers for the watch as I use my Galaxy watch a lot. So a large upfront cost. Also hate that they didn't bring in USB-C.

Other than that, I use Nova Prime launcher and will miss most of its features. Then learned that my Whatsapp chat history cannot be transferred to Apple, got lots of overseas friends on there and cannot afford to lose the chat history.

Righto, so S10 is pushing it, but you totally love it.

Yeah, features wise Samsung did change this up, most notably

  • lack of SD card (thought this sucked but I've had a 128gb phone without SD for close to 2 yrs now and have only got to 80gig full recently. Props to Samsung for having 128 as base and not having too much price jump to double that.  It will impact people wanting to shoot in 8k etc)
  • plastic back (personally I think this is a good thing as it's less likely to break & will be lighter.  Most phones will be in a case anyway)
  • lower res screen (possibly moot point as S20 needed to go to same res to go high refresh rate)
  • MST payments (not really applicable here in NZ as there was no Samsung pay to utilise it)
  • flat screen

Improvements over the S20 (specially the exynos ver)

  • better processor
  • bigger/better in screen fingerprint sensor
  • slightly better camera (either the ultrawide or telephoto sensor has changed, but otherwise it's the same?)

Agree totally about phone sizes though. I'm currently running a Mi 9 SE (147.5 x 70.5) and in general love me my compact phones. Will be chaning to a S21 in the next couple of days.

Base storage capacity for all models of the S21 Series is 256GB
