I had ES File Explorer , or something like that, ages ago and I think it got pulled from the Play Store

Moved to Solid Explorer and now that says I hadn't paid and it wants, in my mind repayment.

Anyway, what else are Geekzoners using as an Android file browser?

The little things make the biggest difference.

"file commander" has been pretty good, was the stock stand when I used Sony and have continued to use it due to it's features

edit: spelling

If you've purchased Solid Explorer, the purchases will be tied to your Google account, so you don't need to purchase it again.

Open the side bar menu, click the kebab icon (3 dots), click About, then down near the bottom there's a Restore Purchases menu item.

That will get Solid Explorer to re-check your Google account and should solve the problem.

I was in the same boat and settled on X-plore File Manager which I've been pretty happy with, but always keen on new recommendations too.

I recommend FX File Explorer. The free version is actually really good, and is properly free (no ads).

There is a paid add-on that enables things like connecting to network shares, cloud storage, and encrypted zip files. If those things matter, the add-on only costs a few bucks.

Solid Explorer is great. If you buy it once it's on your Google account, send them a message if you can't get it going again. Seems to be automatic for me though.

I also use ES File Explorer on other phones / Kindle Fire when I don't want to pay for it again. A great feature of ES File Explorer is it acts as an FTP server so you can use it to upload media to locked down devices like the kindle fire.

That seems a little odd. Follow what @xcubed posted and hopefully that'll sort things out. Everything was automatic when I installed Solid Explorer - my licence status shows as "Legacy License".

I recommend X-plore for a file browser.  It is far and away better than any other I have tried.  After I paid for it, I stopped trying others as X-plore has everything I ever wanted or needed for a file browser.  It is not pretty like some, but wow is it functional!  It even has its own builtin WiFi file sharing server which I use to copy books and photos between my tablet and phone when I am away from home.
