Am I going mad..... didn't Google Maps used to have the option (when using for driving directions) to show you the speed limit on screen as well as alert when you went over the limit by a pre-defined amount ?

I'm pretty sure Waze has it but Google added it to their own maps when they bought Waze....

Open Google Maps on your device, press your profile icon at the top-right corner, then Settings.

Tap Navigation settings, scroll down to “Driving options,” then switch the slider to “On” (so that it's blue).

Yup

Yup, done that and all I got over the weekend was the speed I was doing, no indication of the actual road limit or notifications that I was going over.

There is a BIG proviso here. It is currently only available on Android, not iOS and only in certain countries.

zocster instructions are correct but if the heading Driving Options - Speed Limits - Speedometer does not appear then it is not available.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

depends where you're driving. google does not know speed limits of every single road in NZ. Most of the time it's ok in AKL, but smaller roads around Waitakere - nothing. The same applied to central north island, sometimes it would direct you via small road with 50kmh speed limit thinking that you can driver 100kmh there... and it's gravel, and it's for 50+ km. I hate google :D

I'm on a Samsung A72, can see the option for Speedometer, but that des not give me any other  options or show the speed limit. Travelled from Akl -> TRG -> Akl this weekend. Done the trip before using my Huawei P10Lite and all worked on that. Weird... oh well, guess I'll throw Waze back on.

Sounds handy, but on Google Pixel 4a I don't see that set of options yet. I have noticed when I check for updates, which is every few days, sometimes the updates were released a month ago and they're only just being offered to my phone.

I use Google Maps via my Nokia running Android One so theoretically right up to the minute with updates.  With the Driving Options enabled, it shows me my current speed but I've never seen it tell me what the road's posted speed limit is.  My old Tomtom used to and although couldn't be used to argue out of a speeding ticket, was handy when traveling if you didn't notice what a limit was through a small town etc...

I'd suggest Google already knows what all the posted speed limits are as calculating all those limits to the destination and current speed is how it comes up with a dynamic ETA to the destination?

In years past I’ve used an Android app called Velociraptor - it starts up with Google Maps and provides two circles to show current speed and the posted speed limit. Can have an audible speed alert if desired (can select tolerance), and can set the size/opacity of the circles (plus drag them around the screen).

Given it’s been a while I can’t remember how accurate the posted limits are (the limits come from Open Street Map), but I’ve reinstalled it and plan to give another trial...

Here’s a link to the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pluscubed.velociraptor&hl=en_NZ&gl=US

HereWeGo or Here Maps shows the speed limits on the screen and you can set what speed above the limits you want to get an audible alert. Been my go to nav app from since it was Nokia Maps.

Also note that these types of things, as well as the eRoad devices often used to monitor commercial drivers' speeds, generally aren't aware of temporary speed restrictions even when they're in place for months or years.
