Hi everyone,

Would you be concerned about buying a new phone or tablet & finding out it was manufactured just over a year ago?
Lithium batteries shouldn't be stored fully discharged but this device was completely flat which made me look up the date of manufacture.

I thought lithium's start deteriorating from the factory whether you use them or not, so there's both the age & the sitting around flat.

No not really. I have some devices 10 years old flat for long periods of time. One year is not an issue for good quality devices. The other thing, by the time a device arrives in NZ, goes on special for end of line, one year or longer since manufacture is not unusual.

Thanks GZT, yes I'm probably concerned for nothing.

Not if it's new, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's a device that has been used and abused for a few years then I expect battery life to be poor.

However I do have a laptop (it is an el-cheapo Toshiba, cost me about $600 new) from 2011 which has had only moderate use since then and the battery still lasts about 2 hours with normal use.

I think with phones the power draw can be quite high and heat dissipation is poor. I blame Pokemon Go for reducing the battery life on my iPhone 6+ and before that Skype on the Samsung S3 would need so much power the battery would still slowly discharge even when plugged in!

the only device i have bought new that came with a flat battery is one i suspect was actually used as display stock.

This was the 1st one I've ever had flat out of the box, which is why I looked up the build date & was concerned initially.
You hear so many things about making sure to look after lithium's. It's a tablet as well which I would probably want to keep longer or pass on verse a phone.
