Short version: Samsung rolls out broken update right before New Year, shops/support closed, people's phones break, people mad. And who can blame them?

 

A good reminder to make sure that you're backing up your phone.

 

Looks like lots of people don't have auto backup enabled or  never manually did it.

This a warning about update ruining peoples phones and charging to fix when not their fault, similar to when Samsung did update on galaxy watch 4 and wanted to charge to fix when not their fault as due to software update. I do realize this is in Australia but could happen here and warning to have backup before updating product. Samsung products not cheap and really fed up with these update debacles and will be looking at different brand as already have a bricked watch and since last update on my s22 ultra battery draining badly.

Autoback-ups won't save some authenticator profiles etc, just the fact you had the app in the first place. So yea, I get people being pissed about this.

all you put in the post was "Samsung Update Chaos" and a link to a story. how is that self explanatory? Samsung make appliances, mobile devices, TV's audio equipment and more.

which out clicking the link, which many dont want to do unless they want to know more, doesn't explain what kind of devices its for or what the chaos was.

its not hard to put a simple paragraph explaining the story along with your link.

Can't work out how to edit title perhaps better if says Samsung Mobile Phone update chaos, but I thought this section under android was all mobiles and can understand confusion people thinking could be other appliances plus also about people wary about clicking links without any information so my mistake.

One of the most frustrating parts of android vs iphone where you can lose your phone, put in your icloud on a new one and it comes back almost exactly as the old one was if you were paying for icloud backups.

Suggesting that backups are a solution for this is absurd. Samsung have cocked this up and should be resolving this for people.

I broke my iPhone last year and found that apps could exempt themselves from backups there too.

d3Xt3r: It's surprising to see so many people complain about lost contacts - on Samsung phones, you can sync your contacts to both Google and Samsung clouds. Even if you don't enable any of the Samsung cloud stuff, as soon as you sign in to your Google account when setting up your phone, your contacts are backed up by default - you'd have to go out of your way to disable the sync. Sure, Samsung may have screwed up, but there's no excuse for not having a backup strategy for your data these days - and that strategy can be as simple as clicking "yes" to all the backup prompts during setup.

I lose contacts on my phone all the time. Something hinky with the syncy to Outlook I thinky. Just before Xmas, everything from M onwards, poof, gone. Fact is, I've never got it to work right, and I suspect I'm not alone. I just get used to re-entering stuff. I've spent hours trying to work out why its flaky, re-entering so far is easier and quicker.

Why is this only affecting Australia? As far as I'm aware Apple issue the same software updates globally, so I would have thought that Samsung would do likewise?
