Whats the story with Google and Huawei these days........  if I went out and bought a recent Huawei phone, do I have access to Google Play Store out of the box ? Or do I get Huawei's version and unable to access the official Google Play Store ? (Unless I stuff around)

Last Huawei I purchased (2 years ago) had no issues.....

TIA

Anything after the P30 Pro needs you to do a makeshift fix. They are still on the "Entity List" in the USA, so there is no official google. But the new fixes are pretty straightforward. I am a big fan and refuse to sell my P30 and would love the Mate 50, but as the latest worldwide models are expensive, it is likely not worth the hassle. Googlefier moved to GSpace, and now the new, less power-intensive GBox all at various times let you run google apps on different models.

TLDR - Can I run Google - Yes ... but...

That is not entirely true.

Is it a tragic irony that Huawei can still run open-source Google stuff?

Android itself is backed by the open-source handset project which is sponsored by Google. But Google’s proprietary software is embargoed by edict of the US government: Google Chrome, Google Play, and Google Play Services.

So Joe Bloggs buys a new Huawei, and is limited to what they may have been use to in the past ?

No. They buy the phone and use the Huawei store, search for google and up comes options to install apps to run Google Services.

Very few stores in NZ now sell the phones due to the workaround needed. Im a mega fan and chose not to buy one. If it changes (and who knows it may) I would consider using again

Same P30 has been amazing and I'm still yet to find a phone thats equivalent to it in the mid range price of $500-700

Honestly, I wish Huawei had Google Play store capabilities, their phones are amazing frankly, best camera, best battery longevity (Samsung sucks in this regard esp. with the recent bloat-gate stuff) - the ban however spoils it and makes it not worthwhile.

I was on Gspace but Gbox is easier to use and works seamlessly with more apps.

But I can't run some apps like Good Nature which is for monitoring my rat traps.

Ahhh disappointing. Mt faithful Nova5t stopped charging over the weekend. It served me well over 3 years. I can't see anything nearly as good at the $450 price I paid for it then. I'm considering trying to repair it even/

Even if Huawei got off the blacklist i don't think they would go back to Gapps out of the box / pre-installed only for the US to do it to them again.  Plus their own HarmonyOS is doing well these days, 3rd larges app store now (after google play and apple store).  The real issue around it was also the chips, they still can't get snapdragons 5g chips/radio (they are limited by the US to 4g and below only).

I also enjoyed their phones (once getting use to the interface) but the main issue I had was the overkill of background apps. There was many a time when my music apps would just stop after 2 or 3 minutes.

They were the kings of battery life however the new s23 ultra is now the king for Android.
