Hey guys,

has anyone with the Telstra version of the HTC Desire successfully flashed a generic ROM onto it?

I'm looking at doing so, but have heard on several forums that it creates issues with the GPS.

Anyone got any experiences they want to share? :D

Cheers.

What about this from the other thread you started?

Lambchop: just noticed this thread, i brought mine from MobiCity on release day, took about a week to get here.

but yeh NextG version runs perfectly, picked all the apn stuff right off my sim , everything works.

only thing to note about this version of the phone is out of the box gps wont work properly, it still does a good enough job at it to fool people into thinking it's working in stuff such as google maps..but download GPS Test and you'll see what i mean.

just go here for the fix:

http://www.htc.com/au/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=941&news_id=640

also i think theres a OTA update ..but i didnt wait for that.

after doing that though, to root the phone you'll have to follow instructions at the following site:

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307365/04-may-r4-htc-desire-rooting-guide-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/

because the telstra gps fix actually updates the rom to v1.16 choose the rom option described by  :

"ONLY if the above download is suitable – if you have a bootloader version 0.80.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.21.xxx.x or below "

and then once you have a rooted phone, try this rom

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307881/06-may-r1-modaco-custom-rom-for-htc-desire-with-online-kitchen/

"- r1 ROM with default MoDaCo additions "

well thats what i did anyways.  result a clean telstra free, rooted NextG desire ..works perfectly.   Had all kinds of trouble prior to that because the avail stock roms out there actually undid the telstra gps fix.

the phone is all kinds of awesome.

You should give that a go and let me know if it works before I order one ;)

Nah I don't really want to root it. Seems to be a lot of bricked desires around. Not worth the risk IMO

I'm not certain (I don't own an Android phone yet) but I don't believe that a generic ROM is available yet; HTC doesn't seem to have released any updates and I read on MoDaCo that it's not yet possible to extract the existing ROM from a device. In other words, there is no generic ROM to actually flash on there, only custom ones.

An official generic ROM should be available in the near future, alongside the release of Android 2.2. I have no idea whether that ROM will install over the top of the Telstra ROM, or whether you need to root or otherwise hack the phone in order to get it working. I'm sure that someone more knowledgeable will have a better idea, although nobody will know for sure until HTC releases the ROM.

i flashed my telstra desire with a generic rom the day it arrived, back then gps wasn't working period on the offical rom ..the generic rom got it going - well as long as you didn't turn data on.

i've since rooted and am running pauls custom rom ...  is flawless.

If you are talking about the usb getting bricked... there is a fix for that now.

Out of curiosity I emailed HTC asking about a non-Telstra ROM and got the following reply:

"Hi Giggs, I’m Conrad, and I am glad to assist you today. We appreciate your support for our products. Regarding your concern, I do apologize but we still don’t have a generic ROM upgrade with the HTC Desire. Since the handset is exclusively being marketed by Telstra, they have the handset customized for branding. We still don’t have an exact date as to when will HTC Desire be available in New Zealand. Thank you for contacting HTC. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any future questions. You may give us a call at 1300 482 482. Our business hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm SYDNEY Time, from Mondays to Saturdays and closed on Public Holidays. Thank you and have a nice day!"

Not less than I expected but hopefully one day...

Cheers

Any way to get ahold of one of these 850mhz versions in NZ? Would prefer to buy locally as importing means if it was faulty, then you'd be stuffed.

www.mobicity.com.au offer an international warranty.

As far as I know there's no way to get the 850mhz version in NZ
