I'm not sure if it's something I am doing, something I have failed to do, or something Slingshot (my carrier) has/hasn't done, but I cannot get the voicemail speed-dial to work on my Desire. (Manually dialing the voicemail number works though).

I cannot hold the 1 key and conntect to voicemail. Instead it dials a strange number - +6421700700 - which i never put in there - and fails.

If I go into the "settings/call/voicemail settings/" menu on the Desire, and edit the voicemail number - the Desire refuses to take it, giving me a 'voicemail number change unsuccessful. Please contact your carrier if this problem persists." error.

Is this a Desire problem, or a Slingshot problem? Any one know how to fix it ?

Thanks Smile

Has it ever had a Vodafone SIM card in it? That's the Vodafone voicemail number.

Are you trying to change the number to 909? Perhaps try + 64 28 258 00 909 although not sure if it is charged the same way?

Nope, never had a vodafone sim. Or any other sim. Just slingshot...

I have tried the + 64 28 258 00 909 number, and it made no difference. It is the same number I tried previously, the spaces in it made no difference.

I don't think slingshot re-configured their sims or phones PROPERLY when they got them from voda. For me at least...

Thanks for your help though.

Anyone with a HTC Desire and Slingshot SIM having voicemail trouble?

I am not on slingshot, but when I try to change the VM settings I get the same message "voicemail number change unsuccessful" Maybe its linked to the SIM card, JohnR may be able to help.

I phoned slingshot, and after waiting for WAAY to long got a nice Irish woman, who also could not change her speed dial for voicemail (and she was with slingshot too).

What is it with these cell phone companies? Lock down for the cheap thrill of power it gives you? ....

Anyway, she was going to contact voda to see what they think. Haven't heard back yet. I think I'll try JohnR...

Update:

After some research, a contact at Slingshot informed me of an interesting discovery about the above problem:

It went away (for him) when he updated to Froyo (the official HTC OTA one). He told me that at first the problem still existed, but after a re-boot or two it went away and the new voicemail number was installed for the fastdial.

However this will not work for me: I have rooted and installed a custom ROM - and installing the official ROM re-locks my Desire and currently there is no way to confidently re-ROOT it after the 2.2 update. I like having the option of custom ROM updates, so i will stick with it for now.
