I bought a 7-inch, 600MHz / 128MB RAM Android v1.6 tablet on Trademe a couple of days ago. Just couldn't restrain my curiosity any longer.

I paid $156 for it, plus a courier charge.

I'll be doing a full review for my blog, but so far I've got it on wifi and been browsing quite happily on the big screen - portrait or landscape. This is a cool wee device for the price. Hope it lasts more than a few weeks. ;-)

Here's a photo I took this morning.

7-inch no-name Android tablet

Looks alright eh :), just wondering:

- does the USB cable work to charge it?
- How is divx/video playback?
- Have you put the Swype beta on it yet?

No.

Not at this price.

It's basically an equivalent to an iPod Touch with a screen 4 times the size and running Android. For $156.

There are much more sophisticated Android tablets on the way that will be mobile-data capable, but they cost about NZ$700.

This one is dirt cheap. :-)

1. No. Needs mains.
2. Doubt it. But haven't tried.
3. Not yet.

I'm looking at this as a baseline for any other Android tablet. This is rock bottom....and pretty much anything else would have to be better. That's the relative statement.

The absolute statement is that so far it's at least met my low expectations...and even surprised me in a few areas. :-)

$156!
Pretty sweet - Hard to go wrong at that price unless it falls apart or something.

The Brightness is manually adjustable. On a scale of 1 - 10, having the slider at about 4 is bright enough for your average floro-lit office. Having it on 10 is fairly bright....but somewhat washed out.

This is no AMOLED screen, but it works.  :-)

There is an App Store on the tablet, but it isn't the Android Market.

I haven't explored it yet as the device comes with a rich set of very useful apps pre-installed.....including "Document To Go" and it's full-version key.....which may be either illegal or part of the bundle. No way for me to know.

I have ordered one of these from Hong Kong so waiting for it to arrive.

Head to this site http://www.slatedroid.com

There you can get new firmware including the offical android market.

The only negatives ive seen for this device are on firmware so head over there and its really easy to do.

I can't believe how many are on TM and how much the price varies from seller to seller!

There are at least 3 variations.....and one is definitely better than the other two.

But most are $1 reserve with a mysteriously omni-present auto-bidder keeping the price rising.
