Hi all, can you please help.  After debating for over 12 months over smart phones I splashed out and bought the nexus one on saturday. Can anyone please advise what is the best screen protector and case I can get for my N1?  I want to make sure I look after it as best I can - hence looking for the best protection for it.  Easy application a must - not my best forte putting the screen protectors on.  I am green when it comes to this stuff so need some wisdom from people in the know! Any advise: skin, gel, hard case, silicon etc ???
thanks!!!

It generally comes down to personal preference. It's just too much of a minefield to recommend any particular type! Obviously hard plastic would offer more protection against drops than soft silicone. Stick on skins don't offer much protection against impact.

Generally, the cheapest cases can be found on trademe.

There is a good selection of cases at http://www.case-mate.com/Google-Cases/Google-Cases.asp They cost a bit more than the cases being sold on trademe, but from what I've seen they are very good quality.

FWIW I have a "Barely there" case for my HTC Desire. It looks super stylish and is very low profile, but it doesn't protect the front face as well as some other cases (because it doesn't wrap around the front edges of the phone).

thanks for the advise very much appreciated! I like the hard case options as they appear to offer more protection.  But trying to find something that doesn't let the dust creep in.  The cover for my old sony ercison p990i was great at gather dust in the corners!

Case-mate look fantastic! I can't find any being sold in NZ so I guess we buying them direct off the web would be the best option I am a novice at this sorry!
thanks so much for taking the time to respond - very grateful!Smile

I bought my case directly off the the casemate website and it took about 2 weeks to deliver (via US post, $6).  Presumably FedEx would be faster but they charge $30 which is outrageous.

I just took my cover off and there's a little bit of dust in there around the edges (after ~2 weeks).  Not too bad really.

I've found, over several years of looking after iPod Touch and various other devices, that an empty cotton pocket is the best "protector" around. Nothing else in it. No keys. No coins. No wallet. No jewellry....just the phone. The clothes are washed frequently, so dust and grit doesn't accumulate. The cotton constantly wipes finger prints off the screen while I walk or move.

One simple rule keeps your phone safe: Don't try to do two things at once with the hand that has the phone in it. Put the phone into the safe cotton pocket...then do whatever else needs doing. A second rule is don't put it on a table or open surface. Keep it in your pocket.

My phones are in pristine shape with never a scratch on them.....

My iPod Touch looks the worst of the lot as I bought a case for it and grit gets under the case and can scratch it.

People HATE this advice....but it's simple, free, and has worked best for me since 2007.

The *only* downside is you need to wear clothes with a pocket. If the pocket is in a jacket or coat you carry, then pocket should have a zip. If it's a small cloth bag you keep in your purse, that's almost OK, except purses tend to accumulate dust and grit as they are very rarely, if ever, given a thorough cleaning. Many are also used to carry food. Phone disaster scene in the making.

No I completely understand what you are saying - I only wish I was as diligent as you in looking after my phones. I know it;s a poor excuse but with running a business, being a mum, horse training etc - in all the chaos I am always multi-tasking which is an accident waiting to happen with my awesome new phone - hence the need for a case - lol!

For sure females purses are certainly not a safe domain for a phone - lol It's certainly a fair enough argument esp in my case!
Really appreciate your feedback thanks!!!

My Nokia 5630 came with a little soft draw string pouch when I brought it.  I have kept the phone in there all its life.  It keeps it safe and sound.

I never put anything else in my pocket that has a phone in it, if you pay hundreds of dollars for a phone it would be silly to store your keys with the phone.

I also still have the factory screen protector on the phone, I trimmed off the extra tab with a knife and it has been great! Saved me from buying a screen protector.

I am looking at getting a HTC Desire in the near future and will probably incorperate the same protection.  A barely there stick on protection with a soft pouch for storage.
