I heard a story yesterday that Vodafone New Zealand is no longer planning to actually make the HC Desire available locally.

I received confirmation from Vodafone that this is indeed the case.

Sigh...somehow it felt too good to be true right from the start. My colleague reckons it's worthy of a new clip of Hitler's rant in Der Untergang with this topic in the subtitles!

Wow, typical vodafone broken promises..
Wonder how they're going to spin it, after they made a big deal about it?

Did they really make a big deal about it though? I may have missed it entirely but I can't remember seeing anything about HTC Desire on their website.

Big press release with the ubiquitous Mr Brislen involved:

yeah I have to admit Paul B would have been better to say 'a high end android smartphone' rather than state a specific model in his press release. The N1 is close but not exactly what I'm after.
Smartphones are probably expensive to support, so keeping the pickings slim means handsets will be parallel imported, which equates to no support costs from VF. The iPhone is their mainstay.
The only downside to leaving it to parallel imports is there is a choice of GSM providers....

Yeah, they decided that the N1 is a better device. /sigh

That's what I'm planning on.

Phone Insure through Vodafone covers phones bought via Parallel Import stores, just means that if you need to claim you won't get the same phone back.

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=8811:

The devices come in a range of prices and performance levels, to cover an entire smartphone segment. The top of the new handsets is the HTC Desire, with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 3.7” AMOLED full touch screen.

The HTC Desire is one of the leading lights of the Android world and includes HTC’s native platform “Friendstream” which collates all your social media updates from Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. Its first release will come with Android OS 2.1.

Vodafone will sell the HTC Desire for NZ$999.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but anyone know why it's being dropped?  What is its replacement?

Would an imported one work with any carrier i chose to go with? Still exploring my options, currently with Vodafone prepay on a regular mobile, but eventually want a smart phone and data plan.
