If you haven't discovered the "Rock Player" media app, give it a try. It includes the FFMPEG video decoder. That allows it to decode more than the default video types supported by Android. It's free (with ads) or you can pay and not see any ads. (No ads during playback in any case....as far as I know...) 

It's the only video player I know of in the Android Market that can play XVid *.avi files on my Nexus One Android phone.

It comes in three flavours, depending on the processor in your phone: ARMv7, ARMv6+VFP and ARMv6. 

My Android phone just got even better.

Google is a good bet. EG ARMv7 for Desire

Nope. Magic is ARMv6.

It's the instruction set version that is relevant.
