Heya :) - I have rooted heaps of them in the past;

The NZ Magic has a unlocked SPL which means it's quite easy to get root if you have the SDK on your computer, you can grab this from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html - From here all you need to do is upload / install the Recovery Image (Clockwork Recovery) then you are all set to start installing roms.

I live in Christchurch, but can do this for you if you so desire, if you wish to go down this route just flick me a PM and from here we can sort something out. Otherwise take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529062 and http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting and these will show you how to root your phone. If you have got the NZ HTC Magic it's a "32B" which is a good thing to remember (32A Roms will not boot & if you flash the 32A Radio you will bricked your phone)

Anyway, good luck :) - There's also another guy on the forums known by the name as Linuxluver who's quite a expert at this too.

<very off topic>If the title of the topic had been the headline on a newspaper, it could read very very wrongly!

I swear it could've been my cold-talk, I'd think "Magic" being "Magic Johnson" (basketball player), and "will pay handsomely" just... *good laugh though*</very off topic>

If your SPL is Hboot v1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) then rooting the Magic is crazy-easy.

Best instructions I've seen are on the CyanogenMod wiki.

You want to do the instructions in this section: "Non-TMobile 32B Magics and ION/ADP2"

Once you've done it a few times, rooting the HTC Magic 32B takes about 3 minutes.

Honestly......after much frustration I just couldn't do it.
I'm too simple when it comes to android.
All I really want it for is for wifi tether and I was willing to
Buy a myfi from vodafone for $499 so I figure for $50 I'm getting
Wifi for my iPad and android 2.1.
And I don't have to lift a finger.
