I have the "Beautiful Widgets" (paid app) on my Nexus One. I notice the latest upgrade appears to show the name of the cell tower you're talking to. If it isn't that, then the app / widget is now able to determine where you are with greater precision.

I like it.

Yeah it uses the Cell Towers to find the location to show weather data, not the cell tower name I am afraid.

That makes sense. The phone will be switching towers all the time while this location name is remaining constant whileI'm at this location.

Pity. It annoys me that neither Android nor iOS have any support for Cell Broadcast.

It's largely irrevelant since it's only available on GSM.

You obviously haven't used 2degrees 3G then...

I have..

It's something that isn't of any use to the majority of people which is why most 3G networks haven't bothered to deploy it. Depending on who you believe you're also looking at somewhere in the vicinity of a few to 10% less battery life as the phone monitors the CBCH while idle.

If you're interested in knowing technical details of the network there are numerous apps for different platforms that provide far more detailed information.
