I ordered two external battery chargers from Deal Extreme in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago. One for me and one for my daughter. They just arrived, having gone to my employer's head office via the PO Box. I didn't give that address, so NZ Post ignored the physical address I provided, which is a different location. That probably cost a day or two.

Waddeva....they are here. The item is both a power and data dock for the phone *and* an external battery charger, which is very nice to have.

Here's a pics of the base unit. It comes with a power adapter and a separate USB cable.

Cost: US$18-ish (each) - free shipping.

Can't show you the phone in the dock coz it took the photo. I increased the brightness a bit to show more detail.

Nexus One dock and external battery charger.

Can you link to where you got them from? I've had this link open a while

http://www.expansys.co.nz/d.aspx?i=202178

Looks very similar except nearly thrice the price.

Yours is for the HTC Desire. Mine is for the Nexus One. I don't know if that matters.

So how are you finding your dock? I just received mine (from Deal Extreme). When plugged into the USB only - my Nexus One charges only - doesn't give me the connect to PC option.

Hmm.

The dock has two USB ports. If you hold it so you are looking at them, with the dock right way up (dock slot and battery bay on top - not underneath) the LEFT USB port is for USB data and the RIGHT port is for the mains adaptor.

The symbols are very tiny and may be hard to see. Otherwise, the ports look identical.

Have you got the USB cable in the correct port? Data is on the LEFT. Only. (Though I haven't tested it on the right - I assumed it would not work as it was marked for power).

Also, have you got the phone seated right down on the mount? If the mini-USB connector is firmly fitted in the bottom of the phone and the USB cable is in the LEFT socket on the dock, then you should see the notification on your phone (little android at top-left in notification bar). Drop the notification bar down (slide finger down from top of screen - some people don't know that....) and touch the item notifying of the USB connection and it should put you into the enable / disable panel for USB data connection.

In my pic, you can see the power plugged into the far slot and running off the desk to the floor and the USB data cable plugged into the near one runs across my desk to the PC.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, sorry I'm an idiot, I just realised by looking at the photo of your charger that I bought a completely different model to yours. I got this one:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.37086 , and it actually is pretty bad. The USB cord that plugs into the PC is "hard wired" to the docking base, so if you just wanted to plug the wall adapter into it, you'll have this extra cable hanging off the end. Also, I have to really push my phone down hard onto the connector for it to register, and when it does, it only charges - and I don't get the option on my phone to connect to the PC. Oh well, I guess I got what I paid for.

Wow.

The data function in my dock cost me about US$1.50 more?

Can't buy coffee for that.

Might just have to bite the bullet and buy the official HTC desktop dock and car dock.

Ive just bought one of each. I didnt really know which one to buy but I knew Id need more than one because usb charging from my laptop is a waste of time !

The one LinuxLover bought will sit on my desk at work, whilst Im going to try lewavesi's in my car as I have a lighter/usb charger for it and Im hoping the additional 'sides' will help it from falling out whilst driving.

Im interested to hear what you guys think of each of them.
