Hi guys,

Have been reading a lot of threads from this forum lately and decided to finally register and say hi etc.. and yes I have a question ;D

I just got my new HTC desire in the mail today. Is one of the Telstra NextG ones from mobicity (running 2.1). Very flash and having a lot of fun minus one hiccup :/

I can't log into my google account T_T. All my google accounts are @myowndomains. And no matter how hard I try I cannot manage to log into one of these accounts on my desire! It always says that the username and password do not match. However I can log into my normal google accounts on appbrain and via a browser.

The only thing I could do to get it to work was register for a new google account [name]@gmail.com via the phone's setup. And that worked fine... but having yet ANOTHER google account is less than desirable(haha). My quick google seems to come up with the result that the phone just doesnt like accounts that arent @gmail.com :/

But I seem to have missed anyone else from here having a similar problem, which sounds strange.. Does everyone here with a HTC phone synced with a google account have an @gmail address? Or am I the only one?

Taken from the google forums:

Background:

When a user has a Google apps account (custom domain, i.e. user@exaple.org) that address is not valid for google services oher than calendar, docs and email within your custom domain. You can't sign in to any other google service (blogger, picasa, checkout, etc) For that you need a Google account.

Now Google allows you to create an account two ways: 1)with a GMail account (signing up for a regular @gmail.com account) or 2)using your own email address.

It seems that it is very common for users of Google apps, in order to minimize the number of email addresses, to create a Google Account using a custom email address that matches their google apps domain address. In my case, let's say my apps domain email address was user@example.org, well I created a Google account using user@example.org as username and the same password as my Google apps account. This works perfectly and you can have blogger, picasa, checkout, browser history, etc, without having a gmail account. As a matter of fact I bought my 2 nexus one using a google account wth a custom domain (non-gmail)

It works well until you setup your Nexus One. When you first setup your Nexus One, you enter your Google apps account (user@example.org, which is the same as your Google account, and you'll expect it to work seamlessly) and it syncs Mail, Calendar and Contacts with your Google apps domain, but when you want to use the Market, picasa or browser history, your are out of luck.

Solution

The solution is very simple:

1.- Go to www.google.com
2.- Click "sign in" on the top right corner
3.- Sign-in with your non-gmail google account (user@example.org)
4.- Go to "Google Account Setting"
5.- You will notice that under the section "My Products", you don't have a gmail account
6.- Scroll down to where it says "Try something new". You will see a link to GMail. Click on it and create a gmail account
7.- After creating the gmail account, it will automatically be setup as the primary email address and your custom domain as a secondary account. You can still log in using your custom domain address though"
8.-Go to your nexus one and hit meny, settings, accounts and settings
9.- Add the new account (gmail address, NOT the custom domain, which should be already there)
10.- Make sure you check Picasa, but uncheck mail and contacts.

That's it. After doing that, Market and Picasa start syncing perfectly. I have already purchased from the market and uploaded pictures to picasa. The search history also works

Extra steps

Now all email information for the Google account will be sent to the primary address (gmail.com) and not the custom domain. To work around that do the following:

1.- Log in to your google apps account
2.- Go to email settings
3.- Go to accounts
4.- Make your account fetch any email from the gmail account and label it "Google Account"

That's it. Now you can use the market and picasa, and any email, albeit being set to the gmail address, will be pulled by your apps domain account so you won't miss anything. You can continue login to the google account with your custom domain address. Business as usual.

Nexus One is a great phone and most everything work fabulously well. For some reason, we have helped created the perception that the Nexus is plagued with errors and connection issues, and sync'ing issues which for the most part are not true. I guess we all had too high expectations and no products from any company (whether they start with i or not) can live up to unrealistic ones.

The Nexus One and Android are not perfect. Coming from Windows Mobile I can tell your that the OS needs to mature a bit more, but they probably represent the state of the art in smartphones today, in my opinion, incomparably better than the "other" one everyone talk about.

Hope this helps.

Thanks man, added gmail to my google account so hopefully working soon..
However when trying to add that account as a second google account (cant remove the first one), I'm getting an error saying it cant communicate with google servers - perhaps due to not having a data plan (so it says). Even though connected to wifi here.

I'm having trouble with 3g just being non existant as far as I can tell :/ I try to get to APN settings and it's just a blank screen. And says its connected via HSDPA in Settings>About>Network

So frustrating! Might just factory reset and start again..

Oh also, HTC sync program giving me BSOD on install, trying installing various things people suggest in my google searches.

:(

OK, so managed to get an APN added and data working (H and arrows in status bar), which meant that the second google account added perfectly! Still cant get rid of that first one thanks to the market app I guess.

(Not used to having to press the menu button to get screen specific menus - doh. Think I need to read a few guides!)

Does anyone have the latest HTC Sync 2.0.3 for the Desire? The link on the HTC site is dead and I don't trust these shareware download sites.

I am logged into my @mydomain.co.nz accounts on my Desire, it works fine.
No idea where I got the Desire from, it was sort of Donated to me, but a nice replacement for my Magic.
It just worked with me. You need to enter the full address in, for example - [name] @mydomain.co.nz + your password. I don't have these domains working on Gmail or anything.

{Mod Edit : BH : Removed email address to prevent spam bot harvesting. Come on people please read the FUG. Also removed domain names. Please use example domains.}

Yeah I am running Android 2.2 on mine, it's always worked with me, have no idea why it shouldn't work with you.
If it's registered as a Google Account it should just work, I get Emails etc to my Android Device quite nicely :)
