I see that an app called 'RyanZA's One Click Lag Fix' has been put on Android Market.

Being a conservative semi-geek (i.e. not really that keen on rooting my phone) I'm keen to know whether there are any downsides to this. Has anyone used this Market app? Is it really just as easy as downloading and installing any other Market app? People are talking about Quadrant scores going from stock around 900 to about 2,200.

Thanks

I have installed this on my stock JF3 galaxy and found a reasonable speed increase. Quadrant jumped to 2100 but I have read some forums saying that Quadrant scores are artificially inflated. i still have issues with the ocassional lock up of the phone. I need to update to JM1 via kies but have had issues with Windows 7 x64 and Kies :/

Perhaps you didn't see this post that I put on the main Galaxy S thread on 21 August:

"The new version of Kies is 1.5.1.10083 and it was released on 17 Aug. I now can't find the site I got it from but have found this Aussie link that looks like it works:

http://au.samsungmobile.com/support/softwaremanuals/software.do?phone_model=GT-I9000

I can confirm that it works with Win 7 64-bit and I updated my Galaxy S firmware to the 'official' Eclair 2.1-update1, build JM1.

When you google for 1.5.1.10083 you find people all over the place saying how incredibly slow it was to download and that was also my experience on Thurs evening - but the Aussie site might be better (I didn't use that site)

Another thing I noticed was that people were commenting that the 'check for update' function within Kies does not find version 10083 for you. Crazy. "

Hope this helps.

I am using 1.5.1 on my PC, however have issues when connecting the Galaxy S - it often gets stuck on Connecting, also it fails when trying to update to JM1 with an error saying "Failed to convert to upgrade mode. Please try later."

Here's the thread I started to try and get help on XDA Forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=766010

Have you got Kies version 1.5.1.10083? Before I got the latest version my phone would not connect with Kies either. I uninstalled Kies completely (using Revo Uninstaller) and downloaded Kies 10083, then my phone connected to Kies and I could do the firmware upgrade.

lokhor - When you say the phone 'locks up' - do you mean it pauses briefly (ie. lag) or do you mean it locks up and you have to power off / reset the phone?

Cyanogen apparently tweeted the "lag fix", whatever else it may do, is a benchmark rort.

It creates a tempfs in RAM that the Quandrant benchmark app uses instead of its own data directory.....and thus generates an outrageously high data access score.

Have a look here and here

It pauses for up to a minute at a time with a black screen

Eracode - I'll try downloading that version and using it. I'll do a fresh install on my GFs laptop.

Does this mean that the Market app called 'RyanZA's One Click Lag Fix'  does not fix the GS lag problem, or does it just mean that Quadrant is not a good way to measure what the lag fix does?

Pauses for up to a minute? That's messed up... my Galaxy S definitely does not do that. Worst lag I've had is a 1 second pause.

I didn't use the lagfix app, but did use an earlier version of the lag fix, made a significant difference to my running speed (I took the quadrant score with a grain of salt, only used it to verify the fix had actually been applied).

I used the lagfix app from the Market Place two nights ago to (re)apply the lag fix after upgrading to JM1 via Kies. Worked fine.

I originally applied the lag fix manually on JF3 firmware. The app was easier, plus it includes an easy way to unwind it before the next upgrade. I think youcan use the app to root as well (although mine was already rooted)

Interesting. Downloading this now. I looked elsewhere but other links I found seemed to have been downgraded to the previous version - there was some speculation that '83 was pulled after the initial release.

Ok using the 83 version of Kies I managed to update to JM1 :D it has a task manager which is cool. only shows 326mb ram total, what's up with that?
I'm restoring all my apps using Titanium Backup now. Slow going as you have to click Install to everything. I let my girlfriend on my phone so I have like 150 apps...

The donate version of Titanium will reinstall all the apps in a batch without prompts.
