Hi,

I'm starting up a monthly meeting in Auckland for developers / modders etc. in the Android space with Simon Buxton.  The initial meeting is described here:
http://bit.ly/anXorN

I've used facebook for convenience management.  Feel free to contact me through geekzone if you don't use facebook.

At this stage it's on a monthly basis, but this will be determined partly by material availability and interest.  It is based in Auckland for convenience.

If interested, please register so I can get an idea of numbers.  I'll put on a few beers, nothing substantial.

It's aimed at people who are interested in Android, with a lean towards development, intending to build a local community.  That said, modding and other areas such as general use will be discussed too.  We will gauge interest in other areas in the initial meeting.

Cheers,
Julius.

Hey, I 'll go!  I have a strong background in development including Java, and have started some Android development on my Macbook, so have been through the setup etc.

BTW - is 220 Queen St Media Design School?

I added myself to the facebook group.

Hi,

It's just down the road on the same side from the MDS.  The entrance is next to Starbucks (cnr Vic Street East and Queen Street) to the right when looking East.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Cheers,
Julius.

Excellent initiative!! I'd love to come........

.....but scheduling a meeting in the CBD requiring people to get there during rush hour isn't remotely convenient for anyone who isn't already on foot in the CBD.

No way I could get there on time for 6pm. Starting at 7PM or 7:30PM would be much more do-able. The crush is over.

Whatever. If I can't make it....I can't make it. Thanks for doing something.  :-)

Aside: I recommend using the editor's link facility. It makes using links so much easier.

The meeting details are here.

7pm sounds like a good idea.  I haven't figured out how to edit an existing post.  Thanks for the tip on how to create a link.

I'll check it still will suit Simon and post back here.

Mauricio has just started allowing "Trusted" users to edit the OP to keep it current / accurate....but no one can edit subsequent posts after a few minutes.

To be trusted, I suspect you have to be on here for a little while and not be a Richard Cranium.

Hi Julius,

Could you please post the details on this forum.  I don't use facebook and therefore cannot see the details for this meeting.

Thanks.

Hi all, just a reminder this is tomorrow evening at 7pm.

Julius is kindly putting on a few snacks and drinks and it looks like we'll have quite a few people and various devices there.

Should be a fun night, come along!

Oh awesome! Am definitely looking forward to seeing a real live Android tablet!

We might be able to sort out a wifi access point to save your precious 3g data, if not for this meetup then hopefully going forward.

Excellent - I haven't seen a tablet yet.  I wouldn't mint trying the odd application on it if that's possible...

I'll set up free Wifi today.

The next day:

Awesome meeting guys!

Lots of interest.

The turnout was pretty good (16-18?) especially as half the people there didn't even own Android phones or devices.

Good to see a G1, a Hero, an LG Optimus and an HTC EVO 4G (WiMax) "in the flesh".  I really enjoyed the modding and development pressos. Well done! :-)

We finished up just after 11pm (for those didn't make it), though a few people left earlier.

Looking forward to the next one. Thursday 7pm are good for me. But I know it's a popular meeting night (along with Tuesday and Wednesday).

Many thanks to Julius and Simon!

Hi,

Good to see a variety of devices and to learn a few things.

It was a late finish. Next time it would be good if people came around 6pm (those who can) and we can talk and have something to eat/drink first, then we can start any presentations / workshops around 7.

There was talk of meeting fortnightly - how many would prefer fortnightly or maybe twice a month? (There's a discussion topic on the Facebook group so as not to pollute geekzone's fora - http://bit.ly/aR9f7y)

There were a few questions I didn't get to answer one around AsyncTasks etc. Please get in contact with me and I'll get back to you. AsyncTasks are really handy!

Cheers,
Julius.
