I had a go at reading the 1,500-ish posts in the main SG-S thread...and I'm not up to it.

Can anyone offer some advice on what the best firmware is for a Vodafone-compatible Galaxy S?
(I saw a supposedly "final" Froyo was being mentioned yesterday at XDA)

Mine was obtained already rooted.

Running 2.1-update1
Baseband version I9000XXJG1
Kernel 2.6.29 root@SE-S603 #2
Build Number - Elair.xwjg5

I'm seeing the lag. It's actually *very* annoying. Gives the system quite a 'jerky" feel. Maybe it's the ROM...and maybe not.

I wanted the phone so I could experience the Galaxy S - the good and the bad - and learn from it.

Right now, if I had to choose between a Nexus One on Froyo and a Galaxy S running THIS ROM.......the Nexus would win by a light year. The difference is stark, having just spent several months using my Nexus One daily.

The wifi performance on this phone is worse than I got from my HTC Magic. Speedtests show it does about 2.5MB down and 500kb up.....worst of any Android phone I've had.

So....how do I make this phone work like the dream it *should* be? :-)

I can see the potential.....absolutely. Beautiful, light....but flawed as it is.

I tried downloading Kies off a file-choking site.....but the three attempts all failed.

For 2.1 best build is XXJM1 with RyanZA lagfix or Voodoo

For 2.2 try XXJPK

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790686

With lag fix of course, although apparently the latest Froyo isn't nearly as slow as 2.1 without the lag fix

I'm sticking with 2.1 for now, after playing with 2.2 for a bit, hopefully in the official release they do a proper fix for the lag issues

I'm loving the JPK Froyo firmware myself, having been on several others before that.

In fact I've got my GS displaying fullscreen on my 42inch television right now as I post this using my bluetooth keyboard and mouse, which are not supported on non-2.2 firmwares!

That's actually one thing I'd prefer, with maybe a new stack for the Gamepro pad :( or Wiimote

Would really like an HDMI cable though, the Omnia TV out through RCA = a tad low res eh

Looks good. ODIN seems to frighten many people. I'm getting a feel for how the phone is set up internally. Looks like it pays to be careful.

I played with Koush's ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery tonight. Interestingly, the "Fix Permissions" task in ROM Manager seems to have made my wifi much faster and gotten rid of a lot of lag. It runs around and changes 179 sets of permissions. It flies by pretty quick and you just hope it's doing good things or you'll have to get ODIN going sooner than expected.

But seriously...the Galaxy S runs much better now.

I also noted that some of the "lag" is actually the media scanner trying to get stuff into the Gallery every time you do anything with a multimedia file - (image / video)

What do you mean new stack for the gamepro pad? It should work with the GS via the GamePro drivers, just like my Zeemote does...

The other, better bluetooth gamepad that works with the GamePro drivers should also work (I couldn't find a reasonable price though, whereas the Zeemote can be purchased pretty cheap on Ebay).

Since 2.2 has HID support there must some other BT gamepads that will work... Will investigate... Working brilliantly here with BT keyboard and mouse.

I'll have to check out the setup you guys are describing. It's sounds awesome!

I got the One Click Lag Fix v2.1.2 onto my phone. The previous lag fix appears to have been broken by the factory reset prior to the phone being sent to me.....so it was lagging pretty bad. The wifi also seemed to be pretty slow.

But now with the fresh reset and the OCLF lag fix properly in place and working......the phone goes like a crazy beast.

I'm there! Now just waiting for Android v2.2.....though can't guarantee I won't do some flashing and crashing before then just because. :-)
