Just saw this release:

Verizon Wireless, the company with the nation's largest and most reliable wireless 3G network, and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today unveiled Motorola CITRUS.  Powered by Android 2.1, Motorola CITRUS delivers an affordable, entry-level, customizable smartphone experience in a compact design that is easy on both the eyes and the earth.

Why are these companies insisting in releasing things with Android 2.1? Why not forge ahead and release devices running Android 2.2?

What are they waiting for?

Looks kinda budget.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

It's an entry level handset.

Maybe its due to the fact that its an entry level handset with not very powerful CPU to run 2.2? I don't really know just guessing here.

Aside from some memory issues 2.2 runs just as well as 2.1 on aging handsets like the G1 and Magic though.
