Telecom just sent out a press release confirming the Samsung Galaxy S will be available "in time for Christmas":

Android gathers pace as Telecom launches new phones

Telecom is boosting its range of Android smartphones to nine in the coming months, as worldwide sales of the Google-developed mobile platform outpace rivals.

Telecom’s fifth and latest Android phone, the Motorola Backflip, launched here in late September and the company plans to have an additional four Android handsets in market, including the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Si9000, in time for Christmas.

General Manager of Marketing at Telecom, Kieren Cooney says Android is increasingly becoming the connected device operating system of the future.

“Android is driving a revolution in mobile - in fact it’s the world’s fastest growing mobile operating system, outselling even the Blackberry and the iPhone.

“The key difference with Android is that it’s an open platform, which means leading manufacturers such as Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung are all able to freely produce their own Android phones. What this means for the customer is that there is an Android for everyone, no matter what style or brand of phone you prefer, or how much you want to spend.”

Mr Cooney says the XT network is the natural home for Android smartphones in New Zealand because its speed and coverage means mobile users can get the most out of their phone’s features across the country.

The other key benefit of Android phones, says Mr Cooney, is the freedom and flexibility that comes from being able to personalise your phone using applications, or ‘apps’.

“The Android Market is where you go to find the apps to customise your phone to your own needs. There are around 75,000 apps currently available, and this is growing each day. Even better, more than half of them are free to download so you can have a very enriched and personalised mobile experience at very little cost.”

I wonder if this will turn into another milestone release failure?

THE main reason I've left Telecom and gone to 2D two months ago.

So it wasn't a network problem? Interesting take, because 2degrees didn't have the Milestone in their lineup, so I don't understand what would be the end benefit of this move...

Sorry, should have made my comment more clear. I went to 2D because Telecom did not have Galaxy on their network. The version that would work on their network costs $200 more than one on VF (and it came with some other telco branding all over it). So I ended up getting a handset from VF and going onto 2D network. I saw how long Telecom was taking with Milestone and decided that waiting around for them to release Galaxy would be most painful experience in my life. :>

Not to wander too far off topic, but I wouldn't leave Telecom because of the milestone failure,  I just dont know if I trust early info off them, until something is actually available I am not interested any more.

IMHO I still think they offer best network for me. :)

Considering there has been no announcement of an 850MHz supported Desire HD for any market, I wouldn't hold much hope on that.

I'm told by a reliable source the Galaxy S is due at the end of this month.

Docomo in Japan is getting the Galaxy S and it's coming with Froyo on it. $10 says Telecom's version comes with Eclair.

Why are the telcos here so crappy? Phones aren't exactly the hardest things to ship... We get the best cars, NZDM are generally the highest spec you can get. And they weigh tonnes. as opposed to grams.

so WTF? No excuses. I don't think I'll ever be buying a phone from them again, plan subsidised or not. Clove or mobicity tbh. Grrr! 2D should have an unlocked/unbranded phone store tbh :P They'd probably get my business if they did. Telecoms plans aren't very flexible, and the ones that are, you pay through the bloody roof! I just want a few any time minutes (50 odd), ~600 texts, and some 300mb (perhaps even more) of data. I don't think that's unreasonable for ~$40 p/month. All the plans either come with HEAPS of texts or HEAPS of (off-peak) minutes, there's no middle ground for those that do a little bit of everything. They then charge you through the nose if you go over the limit.

Pricing/inflexibility of plans is really easy to explain aim. NZ doesn't have enough competition compared to other countries. Therefore we're (consumers) getting shafted. One of the reasons I also went onto 2D is because they provide some competition to Telecom and VF.

Telecom seem to finally be "getting" it.

Good on them.

It won't matter. By then there should be an OTA update anyway.

Nexus One comes with Eclair and updates itself to Froyo within minutes of being turned on.

It's not too bad. On VFNZ you can get 3GB data / month on your cell on the Smart 1 plan for $40/month. Sure, it's a "promo", but I can't see them ending it any time soon as they *must* do it to stop people buying iPad microSIMs and using them in other devices....and putting VFNZ in the position of having to cut them off for violating the iPad terms. That would be *insane* for a telco to be cutting people off for being desperate to use its services.

The $40/month Smart1 with 3GB is pretty good. That's a *lot* of data on mobile, assuming you have access to wifi at home. I use my 3G all day at work and I barely get to 2GB in a month.  They have wifi there, but they block a lot of stuff. So I use my data...and it's all good.
