Seems that nearly every decent phone out there is only Vodafone compatible.

Having a look at HTC phones, preferably Android but wouldn't mind trying WP7.

Been having a look at this phone http://www.htc.com/www/product/7surround/specification.html (HTC 7 Surround) - which I see would work on XT.

Apart from the HTC Touch, Touch Pro 2, and Snap is it? Are there any GRUNTY i.e. Desire HD that can run on XT?

I know about the NextG versions on Mobicity - Is NextG Telstra 3G? So, if I ask if it will run on Telstra 3G will it work on XT?

HTC Desire, but only the A8183 model, also the Wildfire, but only the A3335. Also the Aria works too :)

Yeah several of the models have both 900/2100 (vodafone, 2 degrees) 3G and 850/2100 (XT) 3G variations.

Telstra NextG is the same as XT so if you see NextG, its going to work fine here.

One reason for this is that the US military monopolised 900MHz for many years...so phones in North America had to use 850MHz. This affected Canada, too, as there was little point in providing phones on 900MHz in Canada that woudn't work in the US when you visited there with your Canadian phone....so Canada uses 850MHz, too. Plus, many Canadian cities are a short walk/drive over a bridge from their US neighbours: Sarnia ON / Port Huron MI, Sault Ste Marie / Sault Ste Marie MI, Niagara Falls /NiagaraFalls NY, Fort Erie ON / Buffalo NY, Windsor ON / Detroit MI....and so on...overkill, but it makes it very clear why. :-)

But the rest of the world has always used 900MHz for cellular.

The US GSM market has also been lagging for many years. The largest telcos there have been CDMA/EVDO carriers...and that is still true today even as CDMA networks are being turned off everywhere else.

So getting GSM phones that do WCDMA on 850/2100MHz is problematic....as the main ones (AFAIK) are Rogers, AT&T, Telstra, Telecom XT...and a handful of others.

If anyone can add anything to that - or correct any error I may have made - that wuld be cool.

If there is one for Telstra, it should work on XT as they use the same frequencies. AT&T tend to wreck good phones by locking them and trying to cripple them.

True...2100 is most common.

Not so sure about the 850 vs 900, though...or we would see a lot more phones on 850 than we do....(and we don't).

Wikipedia lists these as using 850MHz WCDMA: Americas (AT&T, Bell Mobility, Telcel, Telus, Rogers), Oceania (Telstra, Telecom NZ)

...and these using 900MHz WCDMA: Europe[1], Asia, Oceania (Optus, Vodafone AU, Vodafone NZ), Dominican Republic (Orange), Venezuela (Digitel GSM)

The "Europe, Asia" refers to most networks in those two areas.....too many to list separately.

On this basis, making phones for 900MHz WCDMA first makes market sense....and the footprint for 850MHz is based in the US and a few technology "client" telcos.
