I saw on GZ that there was a new Kies update available. Started Kies, checked for updates, and Yep, so started downloading it. The dialogue box says it's about 75MB. It starts downloading slowly and at 75MB the gauge is showing 50%. At about 150MB (i.e. 2x the stated file size) the gauge is showing 100% . But does it stop? Nope - after 2+ hours now it's currently at 280MB, still going, gauge showing 100%. Apart from all this, periodically it tells me that the Internet is Off. I click on 'retry' and chugs on again.

How can a global electronics empire like Samsung get in the position where it has such crap software? Unbelievable.

Definitely start again if I were you :-) They are typically 150MB downloads I think.

Edit: I take that back, it seems this is updating individual files for some reason instead of a zip download...

Yes its terrible. Incessant 'Internet not connected' errors and no actual downloading. Killed it and downloading the new installation file from Samsung Mobile instead, MUCH faster.

Mine downloaded fine, within two - three minutes. However you're right, it is a POS software.

spent about 1 hr last night trying to get kies to recognise the phone and failed. finally got it going this morning.

my problem (this time, i have had several other kies related problems previously) was that kies would get stuck on "connecting to device" and would just sit there forever.

I got it going by clicking on top left corner of kies and choosing restore/reinstall phone drivers.

Other tips to get kies going for other users
1. Delete all the drivers in device manager then reboot, connect phone with usb and let windows auto install a new driver.
2. Reboot phone + PC and try again
3. Try different usb port
4. Sarcrifice a pet
5. Make sure you have touchwhiz set as the default launcher and it is running (ie not using launcher pro / adw launcher)
6. Run installation / kies as an administrator / turn off UAC
7. Try connecting phone in usb debugging mode

I should also add that every time I have tried to use kies whether it be installation or connecting to the phone or upgrading kies I have encountered problems.  Samsung have screwed this up so badly that I will never buy or recommend another samsung phone.

PS. I am now part way through a firmware upgrade and it looks like kies has got stuck on "downloading binary files..." the progress bar seems to of paused.

Also if you go into the icon created for running kies you will notice there is a mistake with an extra quotation mark (") in the Start in: directory

Start in: ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Kies"

should be Start in : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\Kies"

I guess I was lucky then.  I did the upgrade at work yesterday and it went through without a hitch.  And it connected to my phone without any drama.  As for an upgrade, who would know.  After having successfully downloaded and updated the s/w it told me it couldn't get an Internet connection to check for a newer version.
+1 for it being a piece of cr@p.

I was gonna post a video tutorial on youtube on how to upgrade the firmware but it won't let me upload 3 hour videos. I'm not a violent person, but if kies was a person and I saw him walking down the street I would punch him in the face.

After the problems I set out in the OP, I cancelled the Kies update, deleted Kies entirely using Revo Uninstaller, and download a fresh copy of the latest version of Kies.

Then connected the phone, which Kies recognised and it told me a new version of Android was available. It took some time but this downloaded properly and I have have 2.2 on the phone. In the end not much drama and the often-maligned (including by me) Kies actually did what it was meant to do.

I now have another query about reinstalling my back-up but have posted that on the Galaxy S main thread - would welcome assistence with that thread.

I've only taken a backup using Rom Manager and restored using the same app. Sorry I have no experience with the method you've used.

I have just posted this comment in the main Galaxy S thread:

Sorry - a wrong tangent here. I was under the impression from earlier posts in this thread that the upgrade to 2.2 would delete the data from all of my downloaded apps. This also was what happened last time I up-graded to a newer version of 2.1 using Kies. Stupidly I asked the question above without actually checking what had happened on the phone during the 2.2 installation.

I am very pleasantly surprised to see that not only are all my apps intact but all the data has been saved as well. eg. all my three-star completed games of Angry Birds, my saved places in Co-Pilot etc.

Maybe Kies aint so bad after all.
