Hi,

A couple of days a week I have to work out of someone else's office, and have been using my Telecom T-stick for internet access.

I'd prefer to use my Galaxy Tab (on the Vodafone network) as an access point instead, but every time a call (and I think, texts) come in, I lose internet connectivity on the laptop.  The wireless connection between phone and lappy remains ok.

Is anybody working like this and has a workaround?  I see there are 2G-3G toggle apps available - is this something that might help?

No, those applications wouldn't help. Telecom is a 3G only network. You could set the phone to 3G only, but then you'd have to remember to set it back to automatic if you wanted to roam overseas.

The phone is with Vodafone, which http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/ tells me I have 2G calling coverage.
I guess the question is more 'is it possible to set calls to use only 2G, and would this even help with the disconnect problem?'.

I am sure that I have heard that GPRS data is stopped when a call is made or received.  You need to have 3G coverage to get around this.  If you're only getting 2G coverage from Vodafone then you won't be able to use your phone the way you want.

On the 2G GPRS network the data session will pause when a call or sms comes in or out.

What location are you speaking of?

Ooops, sorry, I read Telecom TStick and didn't notice you using the handset on Vodafone.

Yes you can set 2G/3G only. But GPRS (2G) will always terminate the mobile data connection. On the other hand, if a 3G mobile data connection is in progress it shouldn't not be interrupted if a voice call comes in.

Downtown Dunedin.

So it sounds like if I set the phone to WCDMA then I should be fine? I'll try on Friday when I'm next there and post the results.

Thanks everyone.
