When people on GZ refer to navigation on their SGS, what system or app are you using? I have paid-for Co-Pilot for Android on my SGS and it works fine but I gather people are using something else. The app on the phone called 'Navigation' says 'not available' when I try and use it. I see the references to the Brut maps etc but not at all sure what that is.

Thanks

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

This link

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887

talks about brut maps (a mod of google maps I believe) and has links to the relevant apk files.  Not fully up with how to install apks on the SGS but I just used Astro File Manager to install Brut on my Hero (running 2.1) as it isn't available through Market.

As Dingbatt says, Maps [brut] is a hacked version of Google Maps that uses the directions Google provides via "Directions" as input to the Navigate app to provide turn-by-turn navigation function in countries that don't have it.

You need data live in order to travel randomly, though the Maps [brut] does enable pre-caching maps on the SDcard for a known route you plan to travel...and it then allows you to tell it to use those maps. If you then deicde to go somewhere else, you'll have to use a data connection to download the new maps you'll need.

If you already have Co-Pilot, then you have all the maps right there on your phone...and Co-Pilot is probably the better solution.

But for people who don't want to spent money on Nav, then Maps [brut] is a good option....though you do require data to be active if you want to randomly move from place to place without taking the time to pre-cache the maps somewhere where you have wifi access.
