If anyone has been looking for one of these VERY rare phones, there is one on TradeMe that closes in under 10 mins.

Here.

UPDATE: Oh crap. I increased my bid to $750 and I met reserve. Can someone else PLEASE bid?! :-)

5 mins to go.

UPDATE 2: Bugger....I've bought it.  *sigh*.

I do know people all over the planet are looking for these models. They are more rare than hens' teeth.

Not at all. If I could convince she who must be obeyed that I need to spend more money I may have considered it. Contemplating porting to Telecom. Current Desire running LeeDroid is just one reason I haven't yet jumped ship.

My Guess, it was an impulse bid comprising of "Really nice phone, I want it, Bid on it.  Last hour of auction, Ohh I don't really NEED this phone :S"

Indecision. It went like this:

1. Login to TradeMe and search on "Android"
2. Sort by "Closing soon".
3. See Nexus One for Telecom XT auction closing in 13 minutes.

(Background: I have had several people ask me in the past week alone if I know where they can get their hands on one of these).

4. Starting price is $700. Reserve is higher.
5. Place bid for $700. A steal for one of these.
6. Wonder how high reserve might be. Think if it's just $750 then this phone is well worth it.

7. Bid $750. Reserve met. Oh....guess I now have to make a decision.

8. Decide it's an excellent buy for $750 and will serve me well in Canada in two weeks where the Telecom XT frequency set is the dominant GSM frequency set.
[UPDATE: My use of "GSM" was shorthand for telcos that offer GSM/WCDMA services. Canada's largest telco - BCE - is mainly a CDMA/EVDO cellular provider, distinct from the "GSM" providers: Rogers, Telus, etc...]

So I want it NOW.....just hadn't made my mind up THEN. Only had 13 minutes from Go to Whoa.

Now -> I'm looking forward to my new Nexus One so I can use my Telecom XT SIM in it.  The money isn't a problem. I have a few dollars spare to play with phones....and this one will have very good re-sale value because of what it is.....to people who know what it is.

No problem. :-)

? Telecom XT frequency is 3G only, no GSM.

Whut...? '3g' is only a rate of data transfer essentially. 'GSM' can be '3g'. The two are not mutually exclusive.

GSM and '3G' (WCDMA) are two very distinct technologies from the ground up.

Ok, now that I am in front of my laptop I can write a longer response.

GSM (2G) and UMTS (3G) share some of the back office infrastructure, and even some of the handset features (SIM card, SMS, MMS). But the air interface is very different.

GSM uses Um, while UMTS uses WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access). This means that while most handsets support both 2G and 3G in reality it's like having two different services, like AM and FM.

Most mobile operators started with GSM, an old technology, but some decided to start from 3G, a newer technology.

In the specific case of Telecom XT there's no GSM component in their network. When you buy a handset for Telecom XT you must use one that supports 3G. Those old GSM (2G) handsets won't work.

Then come the bands. Telecom XT uses 850MHz (with limited 2100 MHz for infill capacity), while Vodafone uses 2100 MHz in the cities and 900 MHz elsewhere, with more of those coming to the main centres.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that 900 MHz WCDMA is the same as 900 MHz GSM, as they are not.

Alrighty, I am now more educated on the matter :)

I was under the impression that 3g was a class of data transfer rate.
