I've got a neutered SGS, and wondered what kind of numbers in NZ are in the same boat.

I'd be keen on flashing new ROMs and such for a bit of fun, but not having an accessible recovery mode is a major disincentive. I've tried one fix, and bricked the phone. I'd rather not go down that road again.

Has anyone had success with a fix for a neutered SGS supplied by Vodafone?

My phone was an Optus phone without the 3BR but I have the recovery/download working using the method provided by Samsung Canada. There's a failproof way on the XDA website. Hopefully someone else has the website details, or you could do a search.

There's always the Jig method of getting download mode, you can rely on this rather than flashing any 3-button fixes, although it's not quite as convenient. You can get into recovery mode using adb reboot recovery.

I didn't have it. I've requested for this feature to be enabled, but Samsung NZ refused, as they say this feature is blocked for NZ phones only. Of course it's bs, because it's reported with handsets around the world and it is an issue with hardware. A firmware patch however can fix this hardware fault.

So I've compiled some evidence (with help of peeps on this forum) that their handsets came with this feature enabled and were purchased in NZ. Sent the phone to them over a week ago. Still haven't had it back, nor heard from them.

I've read on Whirlpool that this method is bullet proof. All you have to do is download this file and follow the instructions. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CDRVTRFI

The original method was done by Richthofen from XDA forums. Here is the link to his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201

I have not tried either of methods. But the first link I've posted is basically a simplified version of the Richthofen's method.

How did you fix your bricked phone?

That micro-usb/resistor rig looks right up my alley. I'll definitely give that a shot tomorrow.

Funnily enough I bricked the phone using the Richthofen method! I sent it to Samsung via the rep I got the phone from, and had it back in just a tad over 2 weeks.

Needless to say I'm not too keen on trying another software hack to fix the lack of 3br.

The resistor rig is already been tested by wazz. Flick him a msg. He said that he's happy to land it to anyone needed. I know you wont need it now, but he might give you an advice etc. :>

As an owner of an NZ bought GS that does have recovery mode working, should I be concerned that it might be a feature I may lose if I flash the official Froyo (once it finally arrives)?

I don't think so, I've seen posts from XDA which seem to indicate that the phones without 3 button recovery were fixed when downloading later updates via Kies.

I hope that is the case but delays with NZ getting Froyo and the comment they've made to Wipeout have planted the seed of doubt in my mind. India was supposed to be getting their update next year but even they managed to get it in Nov.

In all likelyhood, its probably branding that is responsible for the delay. Vodafone may not have been ready when they launched the GS, but they've had time to customise Froyo. It will be truly disappointing if thats the reason they've kept us waiting.

Yeah, branding could be a possibility.. that'd be sad if it is, as I'm sure it'll annoy many people.

Although, they have released since a new update that allows removal of the branding.... so hopefully the same happens here if branding arrives.

I'm keen on seeing what happens here... But I've seen comments on this that go both ways, i.e. some people have updated working phones, and found recovery mode missing as a result.

Aha! Micro-USB+resistor dongle works a treat!

Now, it looks like the Android Dev Bridge (adb.exe) needs it's own drivers installed in order to connect.

I can connect if the phone is in debug mode, but that's not an option if it's bricked!

I'll uninstall kies and the Samsung drivers when I've got some more time and try and get a raw connection directly whilst in download mode.

I purchased mine from Vodafone and it doesn't have recovery enabled.
Although, I have been able to get into download mode a few times.

When the phone was hot - ie. when I'm playing Angry Birds & charging the phone at the same time. Holding VolDown+Power+Home, puts the phone into download mode.

BTW: Where'd you get the MicroUSB connector from BTW?

Yeah I've seen reports on Whirlpool that a lot of aussie handset had their 3 button recovery function disabled after the upgrade to Froyo. So it's hard to know what they will do.

Mine is an Optus one that didn't have the 3BR. I've not lost it during flashing a rom but haven't done an official kies upgrade.
