The news just keeps on getting betterer and betterer..... :-)

Looks like World of Warcraft is coming to Android. If I understand it right, the game is in the cloud and you're streaming the play to your phone.....

"The game is running on a remote host PC" (0:38).

Not really running on Android then. It sounds like those people who go around saying "run Windows on your iPad" and they are actually using LogMeIn or remote desktop...

The demo implies that it will run on any mobile platform, so it's literally correct to say that it's coming to Android. Unless it runs in a browser (in effect a VM in its own right), then a native client will be necessary for each platform. So, yes, I think it would be correct to say it will be "running on Android". It will also run on iOS, WP7, Symbian et al, assuming the developer provides the client SW to enable it.

What we apparently know is that the demo is running on an Android device, which should give us confidence that Android is a priority for them.

Good news and a welcome change from iOS getting first dibs on new releases. If WOW can be delivered in this manner, it opens the door for a huge library of PC titles, new and legacy, to arrive on mobile devices. Monkey Island anyone? Laughing

Cheers,

I disagree. What things is "running on" the other thing is "remote access" which means actually running somewhere else and only being presented on.

Would you say you have Gmail running on your PC or you are accessing it from your PC? Because the reality is Gmail is still running on a multitude of computers somewhere you don't know. The only thing you have on your PC is a client with some limited functionality.

Semantics, but still a lot different.

So you'd say that Flash video isn't actually running on one's Mac or PC? Or Android device? Interesting interpretation of 'running' then. You're right about it being semantics though.

Flash is running on a device. Remote desktop is not...

I run LogMeIn on my Android. Would you say I am running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 on my Android then?

You have to make a distinction between content and program...

Flash on your device acts as a client for displaying content served to you, and as a GUI for interactivity with that content. The content can be hosted anywhere so by your interpretation of 'running' it actually isn't running it all. Yet in your response above, you state categorically that it is. Confusing logic, especially from an 'Alpha Geek". Wink

You wouldn't claim Firefox isn't running on your PC/mobile device, yet all of the content is served to you - normally little of it is locally sourced (ignoring caches which are a kludge to aid performance). With respect, I feel you're being much too narrow in your interpretation of 'running'.

Since we're destined to continue to disagree on the semantics, I will bow out of this discussion and leave the last word to you.

It's been interesting though.

Cheers,

Flash on your device can show content or execute local actions... Just like a browser and Javascript engine.

Back to my Gmail example. Is it "running" on your PC? Yes, some of its functionality is being executed locally on a Javascript machine implemented within a browser - mainly related to user interface. But is all the functionality running on your PC? No, obviously not. It's just a client.

The same thing with a remote connection. Is it "running" on your PC? Well, yes. The client is. But the core is still running remotely.

Will the game "run" on your mobile device (whatever it is)? Not on my books. Is it "coming" to your mobile device? Yes, through a client that is specifically created and compiled to each platform.

I'm thinking the graphics will be done on the phone, but the underlying game action - in much simpler, coded form - will be what is streaming. The data rate required would be MUCH lower.....only the suff that needs to passed to and from the Cloud would transit....everything else would be generated on the phone by the game client.

Sort of like DOOM II when played between two players over a 9600bps dial-up modem in 1994......and it was AWESOME.  Graphics locally, game actions sent / received.

With WoW....the whole point of it is interaction with remote players....so to some extent, it MUST be a "cloud-based" app....with game action "streaming" between client and cloud.

The line in this case could be quite blurred.....as the necessity of network comms for game play is there no matter which WoW "client" is being used.

I'm pretty sure it will function like http://www.onlive.com where it acts like a VNC client or similar. The client will presumably have to have a new UI designed for a touch screen though.

I'd love to try one of these remote streaming game services but I fear the increased latency and worse input response will be a killer.

I'm sure it will be fine, you can play Wow PvE with a latency of 600ms with little effect. just don't do arena matches.

Sure you can but back when I used to play wow I found >300ms ping really annoying, hence the use of ssh tunnels etc.

I wonder how soon will Blizzard be closing that up... Remember, if this isn't getting the endorsement and blessing from Blizzard, it is essentially "trespassing" on their IPs.
