I have recently bought an A T&T Samsung Captivate (i897) and I cannot for the life of me get it to send or receive MMS.

Since trying to adjust the APN settings we've managed to stop the internet access working (except over WiFi)....

Does anyone have the correct settings - or any special tricks to get it up and running?

Or do I need to root it to get rid of all the A T & T settings/restrictions?

Thanks :)

Try this http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=67440 settings have to be exactly as detailed.

Edit: Just looked up the specs on on the i897, its more suited to XT.

Thanks,

We have all the settings the same as this but the problem appears to be with the:

" apn type - default (type this in)"

we can't type default in - the only options we have are "internet" or "mms" or "internet + mms"

this is the same with the MMS settings.

When we go to network operators it does not say vodafone or telecom - it is all just greyed out.  I wonder if the phone is somehow locked to AT&T??  I can make and receive calls on it (vodafone sim) - but these settings seem to be locked somehow!?

Choose mms for messaging. Choose internet for 3G.

Thanks - have tried that.... but no luck.

The message just sits in "sending" mode - doesn't return an error message, doesn't say "not sent" - just sits there for ever and ever in the sending phase until I finally delete it .

I am just about to throw the thing out the window - it's normally so straight forward getting this sorted out - and Vodafone are NO help at all!!!!

My settings are as follows (see what matches and what doesn't):

Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks
Use packet data - ticked
Data roaming - not ticked
Network mode - GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)
Network operators>
Search networks
Select automatically
vodafone NZ
53024
53005

While data is enabled, I am unable to see networks, but disabling data allows me to see them.

HTH in some small way.

Cheers,

Thanks R2D2 but those settings are just not there on my phone. I have a stock version of Eclair installed but it's full of AT&T bloatware. I wonder if the AT&T software has blocked a whole lot of settings and denied access to other networks? Not quite like locking to a network, but close?

Should I root the phone and put on a new ROM maybe?

Could well be that the AT&T ROM is custom.

Before you start tweaking your Captivate, check that the 2e recovery works - that's the 3 button salute using the volume up button, home button and power button. Press and hold the first two then press power and hold it until the start screen appears. If it's enabled on your phone, you'll see a few lines of text appear and remain on screen. Use the volume up and down to navigate through the options, and the 'back' soft touch key to 'enter'. If it is working, then just choose the re-boot now option to start your phone normally.

If 2e isn't working, your phone will simply re-start normally. In that case, you'll need to do a little reading at XDA Developers to find the best way to enable it on your specific device.

One last heads-up... you may need to have more than one attempt at getting the 3 button (aka 3B) thing to work. I have had to attempt it 3 times in the past before getting it to work. Why? FIIK. But there you go.

Rooting is as easy as downloading z4root from the market and running it. It will install the needed components and apply the settings for you.

Not certain if that alone will make the AT&T lockdown disappear. I'd do a bit of Googling and reading prior to attempting it. No fun having a bricked phone.

As an earlier poster has said, it appears the Captivate you own is more suited to XT so take a look at that option before worrying about VF's settings.

Good luck with whichever approach you take.

Cheers,
R2D2

I don't think you're being reasonable. Vodafone do provide the APN information and it does work just fine if the PHONE can do it. Vodafone don't sell the Captivate. AT&T in the US do. I wouldn't expect Vodafone to know squat about it. You bought the phone. You're supporting it. End of story.

As phone users here in this forum, we're all happy to help if we can. Maybe the Captivate can be made to work. Have you checked on XDA-developers? Or Modaco.com?

Thanks everyone,

I have rooted the phone and flashed clockworkMod recovery on to it.

I think I will flash a new Rom and see if that works - if not we'll go back to the stock Rom which has been backed up.

Cheers - will update you all on the outcome - either a) it works, yay! or b) I have a very expensive paper weight for sale. Keep an eye on my trademe listings :)

Flashing the ROM just to get MMS is shouldn't be necessary

Once you're unlocked you should be fine.

You should have 2 APNs. One for internet only, and one for MMS. The MMS APN is still "internet + mms". Also try PAP or PAP or CHAP for the authentication type. May or may not work, however this was required in order to send receive MMS on XT.

The Captivate is a great phone. If you consider it a paper weight, I'll happily take it off you for $5 :-)
