So I apologise for yet another thread on the Galaxy S, but I am looking to buy one. A mate at work has the Captivate and has showed me a app that unlocks all frequencies on a phone and has said that the XT and voda versions are exactly the same with software set frequencies is this true?

So I can buy the cheaper voda version and unlock the XT frequencies with said app?

Thanks for your help gents

There is different hardware. No app can fix this problem!

What's the app called?  I've not heard of an app that can do that.  But maybe there is one.  Would be interested to read up on it.

Nope, Nada and Nope. It Can't happen and I have modfied both a Captivate and a I9000 for a friend.

The generic Vodafone is 900/2100 3G and is set in the hardware (baseband or modem). It'll do XT 2100 in the main centres only. For all intents and purposed, it wont work on XT, No software will unlock 3G 850 because there's nothing to unlock. That nonsense can stop now :-)

The Captivate is AT&T and has different hardware. It is 850/1900/2100. By default it has the same main 3G frequency as XT. If he used said app on the Captivate....

The name of the app must remain a mystery then?

It's really the only thing anyone would want to know from your story..........and you've twice not mentioned it.

Too vague = useless.

"Talked to a guy who told me a thing about a thing and I'm wondering if it's possible....waddya reckon?"

In a perverse way, though, I enjoy reading these posts that leave out almost all the critical details. Might call them "Geekzone Kohn"......the forum equivalent of the sound of one hand clapping.

There soon will be Android phones that can do both 850 and 900MHz UMTS (iPhone4 already does)....and it is always possible a company might release a device that has the right chips....they just haven't been programmed that way yet because the code they will run isn't ready. I'm thinking of the Google Nexus One, which as an FM Radio chip in it....but runs a kernel without an FM Radio driver......

But if you load a hacked version of an HTC Desire ROM onto a Nexus One - Presto! - you have a fully functional FM Radio on your Nexus One.....

It's always possible we may stumble across a phone like that where baseband support is concerned. If an app can make it work.....then it would be awesome to know hat that app is.

One never knows.....

Had a nosey of SGS Tools.. some interesting stuff. Nothing mind blowing though. Codes to get into the service menu will be handy in any case.

Haha LinuxLuver a lil grumpy today :-) Mondays will do that!

What you mentioned about Devices with hardware but lacking the drivers to run certain functions is right and probably very common.

My HTC Touch Pro2 from Telstra came with a disabled FM Radio chip also. It wasnt until I flashed a custom ROM that I was able to get it going.. These days you need to make the most of the $$$ you've spent on your devices!

This will allow you to choose the 850mhz frequency but it comes up saying its not an option when you choose it.

1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] and selection
6. Select [2] WCDMA band []
7. Select [6] WCDMA 850

and that's because there's no 850 band in the hardware....

unless it's the at&t captivate.. rogers captivate, the mexican galaxy and the telecom galaxy s, or whatever galaxy variant has an 850 3g in the hardware baseband..

wont work for the generic galaxy s because it's 900/2100 3G.

no software application is going to magically enable 850 3g in the vodafone/generic model of the galaxy s..
