I have just noticed a couple of changes on Android Market on my Hero (running VillainRom12 - Android 2.1).  There is a 'Update All' prompt at the bottom of the page, has it always been there (have been accused of being unobservant in the past).
One of the apps now has a 'Manual Update' prompt in red beside it, where previously it would just have 'update'.  It is an app that I have purposely not updated for a while because I don't want some of the features the update offers.

While I am on the subject of the Market, when I move to a new phone I am aware that my paid apps will follow my gmail account but what about the free ones?  There are a couple of apps that seem to email a list of apps and links to a nominated address ( appshare, appsharers etc).  Has anyone used them? and if so how well do they work?  And do they allow batch lists or is it one at a time? I am moving from 2.1 to 2.2 so I assume it's not as simple as just loading the apks from the downloads file on one sd card to the same directory in the other.

I think you can sync your apps to Appbrain and then log in with your new phone and install them all again.

Based on your description it looks like they have ported the Android v2.2 market changes down to Android v2.1.

The manual update in red means the app is asking for more permissions than the version currently installed. So you have a chance to think about whether or not you want to give the app access to what they are asking for.

You'll may see a tick in each app. If you do, and tick it, the app will update automatically next time. In the background.

"Update all" means you can push the one button and make all update-able apps update right then.

You may also see a "Related" tab on the search result page....

My Vodafone 845 with Android v2.1 is still the old market.....It will be interesting to see if it comes through.

I don't know if I'm that keen on using my google account logon to enter a non-google site.  Or am I getting confused here?  I guess I could set up a secondary account just to synch my free apps using Appbrain.  Would that work?  I'm assuming once the apps are installed it doesn't matter what account you are logged in under they will appear on the downloads list.

LinuxLuver, thanks for the Market update info.

If you install apps using a particular google account and then wipe/lose/factory reset the phone and re-login using the same google account all your apps will be sync'd to it and you won't need to pay for any again. That being said, all your settings and stats will be gone.

I went through this when i installed CyanogenMOD on my N1 for the first time and had to wipe all the existing data. Everything is tied back to the account you use to set the phone up the first time with no issues that i've experienced.

Yes I'm happy with how the paid apps will transfer.
It's just the odious task of re-establishing all the free apps on the new phone.  In the end it may be a case of doing the whole thing manually app by app.  At least that will give me a chance to weed out all the dross that has built up.
