Since its so little more, and I would prefer the 850MHz of the XT phone, I am seriously considering getting it rather than the 845.

How are they as a phone? the 845 seems good, but has that one problem that I will never be able to use it on XT, which getting the sammy solves, but I was quite happy with the touchscreen on the 845 whereas the samsung has a capacitive one, and IME they vary from terrible to tolerable.

Both are old android 2.1, crap cameras, but basically I just want browsing and twitter/facebook aps, so the total inability to run angry birds acceptably is not a problem.

Go for the galaxy 5 at DSE for 191 - seriously the capacitive screen alone is worth it.

You can also upgrade the galaxy to 2.2

I don't see what the fuss is with capacitive screens myself, they are too much like a laptop touchpad on some and not like a touchscreen shoud be where the part I push is the part that is triggered. The 845 is quite good screenwise but I dont want to be stuck on VF after I end my connection with slingshot early next year.

Its just that it is impossible to actually try the phones out in a store with actual content loads on it, if it was noone would ever have bought a nokia phone since they blow with more than about 100 sms's, songs, or emails on them. Dont want the same to happen with whatever I get.

The Samsung is more comparable to the IDEOS which are both a step above the V845 imo.

Comparing the IDEOS with the V845 the capacitive screen is much much nicer than the resistive.

The Samsung will probably have an official 2.2 update, the v845 won't.  There are of custom roms on xda that are in varying degrees of stability and android versions.

If you want to use XT then it's going to be the Samsung imo.

And the processor on the samsung is faster.
Swype comes standard.
Better audio quality on headset
Comes with 2gb sd card in the box
Just another few reasons to choose the samsung.

Yes it can. You may need to change some settings to get full functionality, and you may be limited to 2G in areas where you would get 3G with a Voda supplied handset.

I haven't found anywhere in the main centers that I can't get Voda or 2D 3G with a 850 / 2100 handset..

I think you meant to add on, that I would have got 3G with a 900/2100 handset because there are a hell of alot of places where you lose 3g but still have 2g on voda at least. Also many more where there is good 3g but marginal 2g.

Without having seen this article prior, I went out and got one of the i5503T's from DSE today (turned down the XT SIM for $30, walked across to Telecom and got it for free ;)).  From my afternoon of playing with it, I'm impressed.

As for 2.1, all I can say is that it's far better than when I played with a colleagues 1.x based phone in Aussie last year.

The only issue I've seen is that both samsungmobile.com (NZ site) & samsung.co.nz don't seem to acknowledge that the 5503t exists, so I can't even see if there is an official upgrade to 2.2 or not (if anyone knows if it's hiding under another name, please let me know).

But I'd recommend this over the cheap Vodafone handset, just because of the 850Mhz frequency alone.

I was told that it included an XT sim but they had run out so will be calling me with one when they get more of them soon.

Strange, when I got it in DSE Westgate this morning, the sales rep asked me if I needed a SIM or not, and said they were $30, as I had decided to switch an old CDMA # over to XT (instead of switching my barely used 2Degrees number) I passed and went to Telecom. Got a pleasant surprise.

It could be a per store basis though, because they (DSE) aren't advertising free SIMs w/ phones online (only Telecom directly are), and my free SIM seems to be under an upgrade clause.

Edit: (Also, in update to my earlier post, I stumbled across the 2.2 update thread)

I'm currently debating the same question: 845 or the i5503T? The best price on the 845 from Te Warewhare finishes today so I have to make my mind up soon!

A question on the Samsung i5503T: does it have a flash of any kind? I have not been able to find a definitive answer to this online, although the specs on the Telecom website appear to indicate not.

Also, just to confirm: is it correct there are no problems operating the i5503T on the Vodafone network, including it staying in 3G mode?

BTW, there is a page on this phone on both the Samsung website and Telecom website.

Cheers

No flash on the i5503T, which I don't actually miss, as far as vodafone, as I recall they normally use 900 (+ I think 1900, or is it 2100) which isn't listed on the Samsung site for 3G, just 2G (thanks for the link I hadn't noticed it there).

The XT Samsung will only give limited 3G coverage on Vodafone since it doesn't support the 900MHz 3G frequency that Vodafone use outside all Cities.
