It's not 3G or GPS built in. Looks a bit dodgy to me tbh the way the advertise some of the features. Spend a bit more get something decent http://www.mobicity.co.nz/huawei-s7-android-tablet.html  (true 3G and GPS built in).

I bought an Archos 101 10.1" tablet for $530 NZ all up landed from Amazon. Good little tablet. Runs froyo but no GPS built in. The capacitive screen is great.

Cheers.

Sorry to hijack the original thread....

But how is the Archos hairy1. I'm looking at either this or an iPad. Can you give me a small review on it. Thanks.

Dunno bout the archos, but I have the S7 (7"). I used an ipad a bit before the S7 (as well as an Apad M701R 7" cheapie droid from pbtech).

What I find is android is soo customizable. Little things like input methods for examples. I can choose between graffiti (the old palm hand writing recognition), or swype, or any number of on screen keyboard designs I like. I can choose from a swathe of home screen launchers with different features and bells and whistles - I can even have multiple launchers installed and easily flick between them.

I can play ANY video files I like. My .avi or .mkv TV series either off the network (browsing via SMB file shares) or copy them to the sd card - no conversion required.

Couple of things I noticed. Apple users will crow about battery performance and occasional lagginess in some android devices. Well what I found is that it boils down to a lack of features on the ipad - no widgets = massive battery savings. And less true multitasking apps = snappier performance. So if you want to better  battery life on android avoid widgets (run your home screens clean like a boring ipad), and watch what apps you keep running in the background. Of course unlike the ipad it's your choice as to what you want to run :)

Hi slliwgd, I have posted a blog post here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/hairy1 on the Archos 101.

Cheers, Matt.

Hi Guys

I currently own both the iPad 3G/ Wifi and the Dell Streak Android 2.2, I love the iPad for surfing the net at home when the Wife steals the notebook and playing games, but my main daily device is the Streak, 5" screen, 1GHz Processor, Froyo 2.2. It is in a bit of a grey area as some say it is a smartphone, others say it is more of a Tablet. I think it is just a great Awesome smartphone.

It is just so easy to use and I can trick it out, currently use ADW Launcher EX with a custom set up I made using Adobe Fireworks and then Desktop VisualizR. (see attached). Was using it in Portrait then found I was using it more in landscape mopde.

Like I said on another Geekzone thread, just keep in mind that the cheaper the Device doesn't always equate to a great bargin remember that the processor will be a lot lower between 500 MHz to 800 MHz, this will mean that some of the Apps may have trobule working, the Streak is 1GHz so has a lot of grunt.

Also think about the Android OS, some only have Eclair (1.6 - Note: A lot of the Android Apps require 2.1 or above to work...) and some may get the 2.1 update, if you want a device to grow with you then look at the long term updates of the OS and will your device get them.

Ask your self -

> Does it have Froyo (2.2),
> Will it get Gingerbread (2.3),
> Will it get Honeycomb (3.0)
> Do I get a Smartphone (Desire HD) or Tablet (Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak, Telstra T-Touch, Optus MyTab)?

If it is a Tablet your thinking about then you might want to look at some of the vids out on Honeycomb (3.0) which has been redeveloped for Tablets in mind, I hope the Streak will get it. Looks bloody great.

Well that is my 5 cents (yes over here is OZ they still have them lol)

Good Luck

Jace
