I have an LG 500 :)

On my old non Android handset I had Internet and MMS APNs configured and never got data charges

My wife and I noticed small data charges for our new handsets.

She wants the ability to pxt and I found that to pxt requires the Internet APN and Data enabled over mobile networks

I removed any Internet widgets etc from the home screen [weather etc]
I have turned off background data under Accounts & Sync

I have not used the browser or maps and I still get a 0.17c charge per day

Any ideas ?

This is what I've been doing with my phone, but I wonder, is it possible to create a short cut button on, say the home page, to speed this?

I leave my data turned off as per the above, but I haven't tried PXTs yet. Will they still work with data turned off?

You can add a widget to the home page with an on/off option for just the Mobile Data.
On my Android version I would press and hold empty spot on home page>Selects Widget>Power Control>Mobile Data and it will add a single square button to turn off Mobile Data.

I notice that when I send a picture message it connects to Mobile Data so you may have to switch it on just to do that.

nope

my wife [& I] cringe at the thought of having to enable something to mearly send a pxt

Maybe its deliberate by Google to get people used to using [& paying] for the Net from mobiles ?!

One of the many reason's I left VF, having to pay a dollar for the day if my phone so much as sniffed their network.

On 2D I pay $6 for 50MB [$3 at the moment as I am still using double top-ups] and that pretty much does me for casual net usage through the month Facebook/ Twitter etc and I avoid too much surfing while waiting for the GF to come out of Glassons or similar.

How did you come to this conclision?

This is not the case at all how charging happens for $1 for 10meg a day on Vodafone and never has.

You don't pay an instant $1 for data usage, it's billed per 10kb at $5/MB up to $1 and then zero rated up to 10MB.

It would be a dollar at around 100K in that case which wouldn't take long if my phone decided to randomly check mail or look for system updates. I was using a Windows Mobile phone at the time I couldn't seem to turn data off without completely deleting the settings.

From what you say, it wasn't the dollar a day that was my problem, it was the really high MB cost that was draining my pre-pay.  Currently 100k costs me just over a cent.

So much easier to stop unwanted connections on a Droid.

Another reason I left was that as a pre-pay customer i was made to feel like a 2nd class citizen.
Being charged a dollar to speak to customer services even if my call was dropped before speaking to anyone then having my emails about it ignored.
Anyway, long time ago now and not the subject of this thread.

I'm not in any way defending Vodafone but you're hardly comparing apples with apples. You have an addon to get 50MB for $6. If you were to add the $6 addon on Vodafone you'd also get 50MB and would be paying exactly the same price as 2degrees and avoid the $1 per day casual data charges.

I'm using a combination of droidwall which lets me black/whitelist apps, and DataSwitch which is not a widget but a program with no gui that you can place a link to on your launcher.

How do you determine which app [assuming it is an app] is causing the data useage

I assume VFNZ won't be able to provide anymore detail on the charges which are sumarised daily (e.g. detination ip address, frequency during the day etc) other than the cost ?
