Hi,

Just got one of these phones. I noticed it is android 1.5. This phone model is now android 2.1 capable. Does anyone know when/if Telecom will support an upgrade to 2.1. Im guessing the carrier needs to provide it but i am unsure as i am new to smartphones.

Thanks in advance.

I was interested in getting one of these, and in just the last week i have done a substantial amount of research. Motorola have to supply the update and they are not going to update it outside of the US. Your only option is to root the phone and install a different rom.  You will lose the Motoblur functionality and any other motorola apps that are installed. I looked into getting the AT&T 2.1 update running but this is not possible.

Thats a shame it is a really nice phone.. and has great functionality. I was really hoping to use Skype on it but they only support Android 2.1. This is a real bummer because it has a great camcorder on it. :/

Does anyone know why there will be no 2.1 apart from with AT&T?

Because AT&T worked with them on upgrading it, AT&T bundle a lot of apps with the phone that you can't uninstall. Motorola didn't find it feasible to strip those apps and release the update for the rest of the world. Not a lot you can do about it. As stated, you can get 2.1 on there, you will just lose motoblur etc.

Ok thanks. I'll have to read up on what motoblur actually is... i thought it was the touch screen functionality lol.

Edit: ohhh social network widget auto updating... lol.. hmmmm...
Guess i'll have to weigh up the pros and cons.

Thanks for your time.

Motoblur is the user interface they have bolted on over Android, the facebook/twitter features etc

Edit: no worries, you were editing while i was posting this reply :)

Blur isn't necessarily a good thing. Some people like it but IMO stock Android would be an immense improvement.

Thats not it unfortunately. That is the AT&T update file. You will need to google for 2.1 (eclair) for backflip, sorry i didn't get this far as i gave up on the phone, im waiting to see how much they price the atrix and will make a move then.

The Backflip will be let down by the Android v1.5 it comes with. Too bad.

Have you had a look at the Motorola Flip Out? It comes with Android v2.1. I've been liking that phone without buying it for a while now.

:-)

Apparently the Flipout has a truly awful screen, I'd check out an actual working one in store before buying.

Well i foudn a tutorial on how to do it but there were alot of posts of bricking so i decided not to. I called Telecom and they advised they are working on a 2.2 upgrade for it.

Ill see how they go and if no results i'll brick it or trick it.

You wont see a 2.1 Update for the Backflip in NZ, Motorola publicly announced the only made a build for US devices, as a deal with AT&T. I am how ever running a Backflip at the moment purchased from Telecom running 2.1, With MotoBlur and is just amazing compared to 1.5 The increase in battery life is amazing. Update went smooth with no issues what so ever.

Would post a link, but involves rooting your device so dont want to post if its going to be reomved by Mod, or linking to such sites is allowed?
