Issue 1. Power adaptor

The mains power adaptor for my Galaxy S is rated a 100v-240v, but when I took it to Canada last month it refused to charge the phone at 100v for more than about 90 seconds....so I had to use a mains-to-USB charger to keep the phone up and running.

Once home, the charger worked as normal for a couple of weeks but in the past week or so began to behave as it had in Toronto....charing for a wee while, then cutting out and. As the Galaxy S has no external light or other indicator to let you know whether or not the phone is charging, you can be cought out with a flat phone you though should be all charged up.

Issue 2. Power-on / Battery weirdness

Now...I have yet another problem...and this is the one I want to know if anyone else has seen.

When I shut the phone down it refuses to power on again. I see the white, whirly asterisk, followed by the battery image - as though the phone were charging while powered off. The phone appears to think the battery is 100% empty.....or it doesn't see the battery properly.

To get the phone to power on, I have to connect it to a power source via the USB cable. The phone will then begin charging and suddenly realises the battery is at 100%.....which it is. I can then turn the phone on. But if I turn it off, I have to go through this again.

Oddly, it was behaving this way for a few days over a week ago...then came right for all of this week, then this morning began behaving badly again.

I'm wondering if the humidity we have been experiencing is messing with the phone's view of the battery. Also, I walk to and from work - 19km round trip - and I have been quite sweaty Thursday and Friday...and the phone has been in the pocket of my shorts. Not wet.....but 'humid'.

Once it starts behaving this way it doesn't matter what I do. I can shut the phone down and put in a new battery. I still need to hard-connect to a power source. Even leaving the battery in place makes no difference. The phone won't start unless I plug it into a USB port.

When it does start, it appears to crash on boot....recover....then all works fine until i shut it down again.

I have tried a factory reset, thinking some app or widget (had my suspicions about Bonjour Battery Pro) may have messed up the phone's battery stats. It didn't help.

I can't get into the recovery menu (assuming it is Vul-Up, Menu, Power)....

Last time this happened (2 weeks ago), the problem came right in a few days. Maybe I just have to wait.

Anyone else seen this?

If I recall correctly, you're on 2.2.1 but stock rom, is that right?  Did you previously have the 3BR or has that disappeared.  I was thinking you could try to reset the battery stats in CWM (on a custom firmware) to see if that might help. But if you're on stock then you wont have that option, and you'd need the 3BR to get to recovery mode.

As silly as it sounds, is there a way you could perhaps use a hair dryer (not to heat it and get it into recovery mode) to make sure everything inside is dry.  Perhaps there's a little pocket of moisture trapped under the SIM etc.

1: The home button will show your charge status if you're charging with the SGS switched off.
Not really convenient, but offers a workaround if you can't find another solution immediately.

2: While your phone is on, pop the back off and pull the battery. Leave it out for a couple of minutes then replace and restart. HTH.

Cheers,

+1 reset/wipe the battery stats then do a 1-2x full charge + discharge cycles. If you search youtube with "calibrate android battery" i think you should be able to find a video on it.

Thanks for the good advice.

I went with the idea the phone was damp and made sure it was absolutely dry for 3 days....and it suddenly started turning on the *second* time I pressed the power button (after the swirl and the empty battery faded from the screen with the first press)...

Then, this afternoon, it started turning on at the first press...and I have now powered it off and on about 10 times with a single press.

Good to be back working properly.

When I walk to work now I keep it in a ziplock plastic bag in my pocket...and use a music app that supports remote control from my SONY Bluetooth stereo headset. So I can move between songs or answer the phone or make a call, without having to touch the phone.

So beware letting the phone get to 'humid'......
