Have you mod'd or flashed your i9000 for better performance than the stock standard?

This purpose of this thread is to consolidate the other i9000 thread containing mod info etc so please dont get into deep conversations here. Please use the other thread to discuss the pro's, con's, trials or testing of mods. Post here when your satisfied with them.

Keep in mind that they are likely to be newbies like me, but want to benefit from your research! Some of use are probably just after a couple to make the difference.

Post your setups/recommendations here for the people getting their new SGS's out of the box and want to get improved performance from them. i.e. battery life, wifi fixes, lagfix etc....

Whats the minimum fixes you recommend and anything else.

If you are going to put a custom rom on your phone there are a few things you should/must do:

  1. Note down your IMEI number (don't publicise it)

  2. Make sure you have the three button recovery and download modes on your phone

  3. Get root access

  4. Take a copy of your /efs folder.  You can do this using apps from the market, but they require you to have root access before you can use them.

  5. Take a backup of your existing rom

  6. Install an application that will take a backup of all the apps and data

1.The IMEI number is on the box your phone came in, and inside the phone - pop off the back cover

2. The three button recovery and download modes are activated by pressing a combination of 3 buttons.  Make sure your phone is turned off.  And leave it say 20 seconds before you try the three buttons.
Recovery Mode:
Volume UP + Home button + Power button

If you're testing this, you'll have an option to reboot system, press either the home button, or the back button (back lit soft touch button).  It depends if you're on 2.1 or 2.2+ as to which button to use.

Download Mode:
Volume DOWN + Home button + Power button

If you're testing this, just pull the battery out once you're in download mode, pop it back in and press your power button.

3. Root access can be granted many ways, sometimes through an app from the market, or by flashing a kernel that includes Superuser rights.  Superuser rights = root access

You could try z4root which one of the Devs on XDA has created.  The file is in this thread.

4.  Your /efs folder contains all your IMEI information.  If you flash a rom and it goes wrong (unlikely but it's happened) then you're able to restore your IMEI from the files in the /efs folder.
When you've got root access, download SGS Tools 4.1.9.  Run the application.  Select "Apply Script".  Scroll down until you locate "backup_efs_.q.txt"  This will copy the /efs folder to your internal SD.

5.  You can take a backup of your current ROM using ROM Manager.  A free App on the market.  When you install it, click the first line which will allow you to select your model of phone for Clockwork Mod Recovery.  Once that's been selected you can scroll down and then take a backup of your existing ROM.  It's handy to have in case you ever want to restore the phone to this state.

6.  If you're going to flash ROMs, if you're starting at a new base e.g. going from JPU to JPY etc, then you'll need to do a factory reset - or at least it's highly recommended).  That means your phone goes back to the out of the box look and you're left with having to install all your applications again.  Apps like MyBackupRoot and TitaniumBackup will take a copy of all the apps and your data settings so you can easily run the restore options and the applications and settings will be back on your phone.  No need to download all the apps again, and to configure them as you had them.

Titanium Backup has a "donate" version which allows you to restore in one go, no need to click each application to provide approval for the application and settings to be restored one by one.

The SGS isn't perfect out of the box, but with some tweaks here and there, it's pretty near perfect for most users.

My recommendation is to "watch" some of the XDA forums if you're interested in applying a custom rom.  Both Doc and Darky seem to be very popular.

Also, Samfirmware is the official place for released ROMs.  You'll need a login but it's free.  New Zealand seems to have nothing official listed there.  Look for firmware under the "Asia" heading.

Ive just got mint i9000T on the weekend.  Still deciding when to flash and what with. Might go cook a rom in the kitchen. :) Not sure I like Kies, Is there an alternative to Kies? What keeps track of all the paid apps you have installed?

I have a 16GB i9000 running on Vodafone with an Asian Custom ROM based on XXJPY 2.2.1 running on Voodoo Stable 5.4.1 Kernel. May look to flash to Hardcore's SpeedMod K13A/B 500Hz kernel when I have time.
