The Galaxy thread is humungous and I did try to read it all but it wasn't clear to me if there's a straightforward way to upgrade a Telecom Galaxy to Froyo without bricking the phone.

Presumably you use Samsung Kies to do it but will it find an official version of Froyo to update?

Have you tried looking at the website: www.cyanogenmod.com ?

CM7 (2.3.3) is still in testing phase but from what I read the other day, works nicely for Galaxy S.

Yep, to "try" and update it officially you download Kies and connect your phone to your computer and therefore Kies. In Kies you got to the right bottom corner to the "upgrade firmware" icon to check if it can be updated. You will probably find that you can't update it to 2.2(it may come out soon) and 2.3 isn't officially out yet for anyone. 2.3 should be out this month. Although there's only a few more days left in the month. Current GB requires root so I can see your predicament as the device is for business.

if youre not going to root the phone then youre not going to get GB on it officially probably ever.

TelecomNZ firmware via Kies is still set to Eclair and probably will be left as is for a long time if not forever. its stable and does the job, theres no reason for them to risk upseting that balance for customers by rolling out Froyo, let alone GB. Even if samsung released the firmware, it would be up to TNZ to rebundle its CSC (associated programs, links, customisation etc) and test and ensure it is stable before releasing it, this would be so far in the future that it wouldnt be worth it to bother - there will be all new handsets to worry about by then.

anyway this isnt a TelecomNZ deliberate stunt, its something affecting i9000's worldwide from samsungs lack of urgency around firmware updates.

Isn't their a way to trick Kies and update a Telecom SGS to 2.2?

yeah of course you can

i just figured if youre worried enough about not wanting to root a business phone, then youre probably going to worry about registry-hacking Kies to snag the unofficial 2.2 firmware as well

i heard telecom nz will not realise 2.2 and they will go from 2.1 -> 2.3 due April/May via kies.

if you want to flash new firmware then you don't actually need to root the phone.

Officially:
rooting phone will void warranty
flashing new firmware using method other than kies will void warranty
hacking kies to flash firmware not designed for telecom nz phone will void warranty

Well I just got the phone and as expected it's 2.1. Having been used to my N1 now on 2.3 I found the menus a little puzzling at first. For example there is no 4x4 dots icon to bring up all the applications and things like e-mail were buried in an applications folder.

Presumably if I found and installed a Samsung 2.2 it would still have the Samsung look and feel.

But what was interesting was the way it handled Exchange connectivity. I recently enforced handset security on phones that connect to the Exchange server so they can be remote wiped. All our iPhones and my N1 were then required to minimally have a keylock PIN. The Samsung connected without any of those restrictions - presumably because those features came in Froyo?

I might try the registry hack to get Froyo at least since otherwise we have a phone on the network we cannot remote wipe.

But you may loose the custom bloatware.

Anyways, if you root your phone you would not loose your "Look and feel", the only difference between a rooted and unrooted phone is that you have control over your phone and make use of software like "Titanium Backup" and Clockwork Recovery.

Cynagen mod is a custom rom, hence it looks different. However technically any SGS rom can be rooted, even the ones given by the phone provider

You can install another launcher from the market without root, Launcher Pro and ADWLauncher EX are popular
