This might be a REALLY dumb question, but I thought I should validate my presence on GZ by actually posting something.

If you buy an Android device, eg the Ideos X5, can you update the version of Android on it as new ones come out? I know the Ideos X5 runs on Froyo, so would I eventually be able to upgrade it to Gingerbread or Icecream?

Please don't be too mean if this is a ridiculous thing to ask :/

If Android makes an appropriate OS for that Device then yea sure you can =)

I've got an Acer Liquid, Currently there's no Official Android 2.2 Froyo on it, but I found a custom ROM made for it so now I have 2.2 running on my Acer Liquid =)

Thats not a dumb question, when a new version comes out and assuming your mobile/carrier have an update for your phone then you can update. Some do this by over the air (OTA) updates or through the phone manufacturers own software, for example Kies by Samsung. Of course you can also root your phone to take complete control yourself and load on different versions of the OS .

2degrees site says that there will be an OS update for the X5 in April, assume this means Gingerbread

I think the X5 is running stock android which hopefully means a smooth upgrade path for it.

It seems that the phones that have run into strife in the past have been ones that have heavily modified android on them.

As a general rule if you don't root your phone you are then taking a punt on the manufacturer of your device to provide updates. I have a samsung and didn't get any however am now running froyo which is more stable than the eclair the samsung shipped.

All depends on the handset manufacturer (and the carrier, depending if it's been customised/locked)

Otherwise, t depending on how easy it is to root/get a custom bootloader on there and how populour it is, you can get custom ROMs that usually have newer versions of android on them, that you can flash youself.

A fair warning to make is that it may or may not adversely affect your chances of claiming a fault under warranty (determined by the T&C's).

If you have a critical software issue that causes problems (and can be classed as a fault/not-fit-for-purpose) then it might be a better idea to make a warranty claim (or at least query if it would be covered under the terms of your warranty).

I have a huawei u8150, i assume the x5 is similar

on the phone navigate to

settings -> about phone -> update

This will update the android os using either wifi or 3g data, no computer needed.

HTPC / Home automation (home assistant) enthusiast.
