I recently brought a Galaxy I9000 when there was a shortage here in ChCH from Telecom but I am a avid Vodafone customer are there going to be any downside with updateing firmware or reception??

It will work, however you will only get 2G coverage outside cities. You will also need to change the APN settings

The Telecom version of the phone should work on any carrier fine in all area's the i9000T is what you should have and that has all bands

Actually it will work on the 2100 band fine  most of the time from my experience with another 850/2100 fone.  The only place I lost 3G was way out in the country where I also lost 2g as well..
