Well now i've made the plunge and bought an X5 I want to look after the nice toy. At the moment the only local source I can find for gel cases is on Trademe. Any other recommendations, and how have people gotten on with generic screen protectors?

Try to find a "momax" screen protector on TM... I got one for my LG and it has one (light) scratch after 3 months!

Good post, I just got the same phone to replace my damaged N95. I am keeping mine in a leather pouch from an HTC Touch, not quite long enough :-) Looking for case and screen protector too.

i've been told that 2degrees have a bunch of cases being manufactured to fit the IDEOS phones and that they'll be here soon-ish

The U8150 is the IDEOS - IDEOS is the marketed name of it, U8150 is the model number. Smile

I thought it might've just been for the X5 and X6 (when it arrives).  They are IDEOS too, right?

i used my old htc magic for more than a year, not even a single scratch seen on the screen. i never put it in the pouch, lay it lying on the table (face down mostly)

my milestone2 and defy have been abused for more than 6months. none of them has scratch (again, no pouch, face down, sometimes it sit in my pocket with the house keys)

YMMV but i personally think the technology has improved.
