Bit of a buzz on the net that an official OTA of Android 2.3 with Sense has started in Europe for the HTC Desire HD.  Anyone with a Europe sourced handset got it yet?
If so, wotzit like (he asked him knowingly)?

Vodafone branded DHDs in the UK have had GB updates OTA already but unbranded ones like mine imported from Clove will be this week. Keen to see the changes people are talking about. Look forward to see the local reports from the crew here.

Got my OTA update on Tuesday night. Now running 2.3.3 with sense 2.1. Phone was unbranded bought in NZ but originated from France. Not much different to froyo but seems to use the battery faster. Maybe just because I'm using it more to try it out and adjusting a few settings. After the firmware upgrade all settings apps and layouts were retained.

Yes the same thing was posted on XDA.  As was a message that the update had been pulled temporarily because of a bug.  Something about excess battery use by 'Dialer'.  But Dialer doesn't even appear on my battery usage in 'About Phone' part of settings.  Maybe I haven't used that function...

Anyhow as far as battery usage goes I retract my statement about the battery life for the DHD on 2.3.3.  Phone has just been put on the charger after being on for 2 days 4 hours without a recharge and the battery percentage read 46%.  Light to moderate use of wifi, HSPA and GPS.  No games.  I am using the phone as..... well a phone, not a laptop replacement so screen on time was only about 2 hours and was the biggest user of the battery (48%).  Even with the same light usage under 2.2 the phone was down to 50% after one day.

Have installed the update, no major noticeable changes I can see either yet.

This is what the upgrade will bring...

Google claims the update to Gingerbread will bring users a faster, more refined and responsive interface. Additions include near field communication, which effectively turns your phone into a credit card, Internet calling using voice over Internet protocol technology, a new soft keyboard with a text selection tool, gyroscope sensor support and improved copy and paste functions.

Without an NFC chip the NFC part is null and void.

I agree, since my phone doesn't have an NFC chip or second camera (for skype) the main changes for me seem to be;
tabbed access to quick settings on the pulldown screen,
better cut and paste actions,
the apps are now paged rather than being continuous flow,
a few new HTC widgets.
And the following subjective things;
better battery life,
faster gps lock,
stronger wifi and telephone signal strength,
louder speaker volume.
The bug that affected the HTC weather widget, whereby when using 'current location' it always defaulted to the location where the software was activated rather than your current location, 'appears' to have been fixed.

I expect now the update is rolling out in the UK all the Clove sourced DHDs will be getting the update.

Yeah I digg the quick settings and the improved app drawer. Will see how it performs over the next few days.

Yes have the Gingerbread update as of 2am this morning, couldn't sleep. Install was pretty straight forward requiring no input from me. Phone looks similiar but as other have noted already the quick settings tab is the most useful. Look forward to better battery usage! Will experiment with the other improvements today.
